Talc-basedproductshavebeenlinkednotonlytomesotheliomaamongminers,butalsoovariancanceramongwomenwhousethepowderforhygienepurposes. Reutersreleasedaninvestigativereportregardingthefactthat JohnsonandJohnson(J&J)hasbeenfacinglawsuitsoverthecarcinogeniceffectsoftheirbabypowderfordecades.Anexaminationofinternaldocumentsrevealedthatexecutiveswiththecompanyknewaboutthepresenceofasbestosintheirbabypowdersaslongagoas1957.Still,whenlawmakerswereconsideringlimitingasbestosincosmetics,J&Jtoldregulatorsthatnoasbestoshadbeenfoundintheirproductsbetween1972and1973. J&Jfailedtodisclosethatthreetestsdonebythreeindependentlabsbetween1972and1975foundtracesofasbestosintalcproductssoldbythecompany,oneevenreporting“ratherhigh”levels. AccordingtoConsumerNotice.org,talcisanaturalmineralthatisminedandsubsequentlycrushedintoapowder.Unfortunately,talcandasbestosareoftenfoundtogetherintheearth,sotheriskofcontaminationishigh. Talcmakeup Whileitisarguablymostcommonlyfoundinbabypowder,talcisactuallyfoundinawidevarietyofproducts.Fromlotionsandlipsticktodeodorantsandshowerproducts,talcispracticallyubiquitousinhealthandbeautyproducts.AccordingtoConsumerNotice.org,talcisaddedtocosmeticstocreateasilkytextureandabsorbmoisture.Italsohelpskeepmakeupfromcakingandgivesthemakeupan“opaquefinish”. Unfortunately,theFDAdoesn’trequiretestingandapprovalofcosmeticingredientswiththeexceptionofcoloradditives.TheFDAstatesthat,whilecosmeticsmusthaveproperlabeling,thesafetyinformationregardingthatproductdoesnothavetobedisclosed.Instead,thesafetyoftheseproductsisentrustedtothemanufacturersthemselves. TheFDAmusthavescientificproofthatatalcmakeupproductisharmfulbeforetheycantakeanyactionagainsttheproduct’smanufacturer.AccordingtotheNewYorkTimes,althoughthePersonalCareProductsCouncildeclaredthatalltalc-basedproductsmustbefreeofasbestosin1976,thereisnowayforthisstandardtobeenforced. Talcinproductsandhealthconcerns TheAmericanCancerSocietystatesthatwhilefewstudieshavelinkedtalctocancer,therearereasonstodoubtthemethodstakenbythosestudies.ManywomenhavesuccessfullysuedJ&Jforovariancancerthattheysaywascausedbygenital-areababypowderuse,butovariancancerisstilluncommon.Studiesmaynotbeabletofindenoughsubjectstomakereliablejudgments.Studiesmayalsorelyonsubjects’memoryofbabypowderuse,somethingwhichcanleadtobiasedresults. ThegovernmentmaintainedMedlinePlusstatesthattheuseoftalc-basedproductscanleadtorespiratoryissuesifthesubstanceisinhaled.AccordingtoConsumerNotice.org,othercommonsymptomsoftalcpoisoningincludeblisters,eyeandthroatirritation,drowsiness,weakness,seizures,coma,decreasedurination,lowbloodpressure,twitches,bluishskin,anddiarrheaandvomiting.Babypowderhasalsobeenknowntocausedeathinbabiesandchildrenwhenaspirated. Inadditiontothepossiblenegativehealthsideeffectsassociatedwithtalcinhalationoringestion,ingestingtalcthathasbeencontaminatedwithasbestosmaybeespeciallyharmful.Asbestosisaknowncarcinogen,meaningthatitcancausecancerinhumans,mostnotablymesotheliomaandlungcancer.Unfortunately,itmaytakeyearsordecadesafterexposuretoasbestosbeforethesymptomsofthiscanceremergeandtheconditioncanbediagnosed,meaningthatitisoftentoolateforvictimsofthecancertoeliminatetheirriskfactors. ReutersreportedL’OrealSAsaidthecompanyislookingforsomethingdifferenttoreplacetalcmakeupproducts,butsofar,nothingtestedhasproventohavethesamequalities.
