Whateveryouwanttimefor,wethinkMakeTimecanhelpyougetit.Moment bymomentanddaybyday,youcanmakeyourlifeyourown. Wewanttostartbytalkingaboutwhylifeissobusyandchaoticthesedays. Andwhy,ifyoufeelconstantlystressedanddistracted,it’sprobablynotyour fault. Inthetwenty-firstcentury,twoverypowerfulforcescompeteforevery minuteofyourtime.ThefirstiswhatwecalltheBusyBandwagon.TheBusy Bandwagonisourcultureofconstantbusyness—theoverflowinginboxes, stuffedcalendars,andendlessto-dolists.AccordingtotheBusyBandwagon mindset,ifyouwanttomeetthedemandsofthemodernworkplaceandfunction inmodernsociety,youmustfilleveryminutewithproductivity.Afterall, everyoneelseisbusy.Ifyouslowdown,you’llfallbehindandnevercatchup. ThesecondforcecompetingforyourtimeiswhatwecalltheInfinityPools. MostofOurTimeIsSpentbyDefault Bothforces—theBusyBandwagonandtheInfinityPools—arepowerful becausethey’vebecomeourdefaults.Intechnologylingo,defaultmeansthe waysomethingworkswhenyoufirststartusingit.It’sapreselectedoption,and ifyoudon’tdosomethingtochangeit,thatdefaultiswhatyouget.Forexample, ifyoubuyanewphone,bydefaultyougetemailandWebbrowserappsonthe homescreen.Bydefault,yougetanotificationforeverynewmessage.The phonehasadefaultwallpaperimageandadefaultringtone.Alltheseoptions havebeenpreselectedbyAppleorGoogleorwhoevermadeyourphone;you canchangethesettingsifyouwantto,butittakeswork,somanydefaultsjust stick. Therearedefaultsinnearlyeverypartofourlives.It’snotjustourdevices; ourworkplacesandourculturehavebuilt-indefaultsthatmakebusyand distractedthenormal,typicalstateofaffairs.Thesestandardsettingsare everywhere.Nobodyeverlookedatanemptycalendarandsaid,“Thebestway tospendthistimeistocramitfullofrandommeetings!”Nobodyeversaid, “Themostimportantthingtodayiseverybodyelse’swhims!”Ofcoursenot. Thatwouldbecrazy.Butbecauseofdefaults,it’sexactlywhatwedo.Inthe office,everymeetingdefaultstothirtyorsixtyminutesevenifthebusinessat handactuallyrequiresonlyaquickchat.Bydefaultotherpeoplechoosewhat goesonourcalendars,andbydefaultwe’reexpectedtobeokaywithback-to- back-to-backmeetings.Therestofourworkdefaultstoemailandmessaging systems,andbydefaultwecheckourinboxesconstantlyandreply-all immediately.
