Theareasofthebrainresponsibleforlanguagemaylookandworkdifferentlyinpeoplewhostutter.Findingsfrombrainimagingstudiesindicatethatthereismorerighthemisphereactivityinadultswhostutter,withlessactivityinthelefthemisphereareastypicallyresponsibleforspeechproduction.Somepeoplewhostutterhavemoredifficultyprocessingauditoryinformationandslowerreactiontimesonsensory-motortasks.Ingeneral,researchhasshownthatthepathwaysinthebrainresponsibleforlanguagelookandfunctiondifferentlywhenstutteringoccurs. GeneticFactors Familyhistoriesofstutteringdemonstratethatstutteringrunsinfamiliesandisinfluencedbygeneticfactors.Childrenwhostutter,forexample,oftenhaverelativeswhostutter.Identicaltwinssharingtheexactsamegeneticmakeuphavemoresimilarpatternsofstutteringthanfraternaltwins.Wealsoknowthatstutteringaffectsmalesmorethanfemalesandthatfemalesarelesslikelytocontinuestutteringasadults. EmotionsandtheEnvironment Aschildrenbecomeawareoftheirdisfluencies,negativefeelingsrelatedtospeakingmayincreasetensionandfurtheraffecttheirabilitytocommunicate.Dependingontheirtemperament,somechildrenmayexperiencemoreemotionalarousalandanxietywhenspeakingthanothers. Emotionalfactorsaredifficulttomeasure,andcannotbeconsideredtheprimarycauseofstuttering.However,negativeemotionsmayplaceanadditionalcognitiveburdenonchildrenwhostutterduringacriticalperiodoflanguagedevelopment. AcquiredStuttering Mostpeoplewhostutterbeginstutteringinchildhood,duringthedevelopmentalperiodinwhichtheyarelearningtocommunicate.Inmorerarecases,stutteringistheresultofbraininjuryorseverepsychologicaltrauma.Thisformofstuttering,knownas“acquired”stuttering,differsfromdevelopmentalstutteringinbothitscausesandmanifestations.
