Singapore'swasterecyclingrateincreasesin2021-Xinhua Singapore'swasterecyclingrateincreasesin2021Source:XinhuaEditor:huaxia2022-04-1822:06:00SINGAPORE,April18(Xinhua)--Singapore'soverallrecyclingratehasimprovedfrom52percentin2020to55percentin2021,onthebackofimprovedeconomicconditionsandincreasedbusiness,saidtheMinisterforSustainabilityandtheEnvironmentGraceFuonMonday.Butlastyear'soverallrecyclingrateisstillbelowthepre-COVID-19levelof59percentin2019,sheadded.FusaidatthejointopeningofCleanEnviroSummitSingaporeandSingaporeInternationalWaterWeekthatundertheSingaporeGreenPlan2030launchedin2021,thecity-stateispursuingthevisionofaZeroWasteNation,toreducecarbonemissions,boostresourceresilienceandconservelandfillspace.AccordingtoSingapore'sNationalEnvironmentAgency,therecyclingrateisderivedfromtheamountofwasterecycleddividedbythetotalamountofwasterecycledandwastedisposedof.Singapore'snationalgoalsaretoachievea70percentoverallrecyclingrateby2030.InSingapore,wastedisposedofisincineratedandsentdirectlytolandfills.TheresultantashfromincinerationissubsequentlydisposedatSingapore'sonlylandfill,SemakauLandfill.Asbothincinerationplantsandlandfillarecapital-intensiveinfrastructuresandrequirelargetractsofland,land-scarceSingaporecannotcontinuetobuildincinerationplantsandlandfillstocopewiththegrowingdemandforwastedisposal,accordingtoaSingaporegovernment'swebsite.TheSingaporeGreenPlan2030isanationalmovementthatoutlinesconcreteandambitiousplanstowardssustainabledevelopmentandnetzeroemissionsbyoraroundmid-century.FusaidthatSingaporemustpushformoresustainableconsumptionandproductionpracticestoachieveitstargetofreducingwaste-to-landfillpercapitaby30percentby2030.Besides,Singaporeisintroducingmeasurestoclosethewasteloops,suchasaschemetoensureproperhandlingandtreatmentofe-waste,requirementsover2024and2025forindustrialandcommercialbuildingstosegregatefoodwaste,andaplantoimplementadisposablecarrierbagchargeatlargesupermarkets.■ Singapore'swasterecyclingrateincreasesin2021
