Inliterature,"TheAbsent-MindedBeggar"isapoembyRudyardKipling,writtenin1899,[11]andwasdirectedattheabsent–mindednessofthepopulationofGreatBritaininignoringtheplightoftheirtroopsintheBoerWar.Thepoemillustratedthefactthatsoldierswhocouldnotreturntotheirpreviousjobsneededsupport,[12]andtheneedtoraisemoneytosupportthefightingtroops.ThepoemwasalsosettomusicbyGilbert&SullivanandacampaignraisedtosupporttheBritishtroops,especiallyontheirdepartureandreturn,andthesickandwounded.[13]FranzKafkaalsowrote"Absent-mindedWindow-gazing",oneofhisshort-storytitlesfromBetrachtung.
