Low-lyingplacentaAsyourpregnancyprogresses,yourwombexpandsandthisaffectstheplacenta'sposition.Theareawheretheplacentaisattachedusuallystretchesupwards,awayfromyourcervix.Iftheplacentastayslowinyourwomb,neartoorcoveringyourcervix,itmayblockthebaby'swayout.Thisiscalledlow-lyingplacentaorplacentapraevia.Itaffectsabout1inevery200births,butinmostcasesthecervixisnotcompletelycovered.Thepositionofyourplacentawillberecordedatyour18-to21-weekultrasoundscan.Ifyourplacentaissignificantlylow,you'llbeofferedanextraultrasoundscanlaterinyourpregnancy(usuallyatabout32weeks)tocheckitspositionagain.For9inevery10women,theplacentawillhavemovedintotheupperpartofthewombbythispoint.Iftheplacentaisstilllowinyourwomb,there'sahigherchancethatyoucouldbleedduringyourpregnancyorduringyourbaby'sbirth.Thisbleedingcanbeveryheavyandputyouandyourbabyatrisk.Youmaybeadvisedtocomeintohospitalattheendofyourpregnancysoemergencytreatment(suchasabloodtransfusion)canbegivenveryquicklyifyoubleed.Iftheplacentaisnearorcoveringthecervix,yourbabycan'tbedeliveredthroughthevagina,soa caesareansectionwillberecommended.Alow-lyingplacentacanbeassociatedwithpainless,brightredbleedingfromthevaginaduringthelast3monthsofpregnancy.Ifthishappenstoyou,contactyourmidwifeorGPimmediately. RetainedplacentaAfteryourbaby'sborn,partoftheplacentaormembranescanremaininthewomb.Thisisknownasretainedplacenta.Ifuntreated,aretainedplacentacancauselife-threateningbleeding.Breastfeedingyourbabyassoonaspossibleafterthebirthcanhelpyourwombcontractandpushtheplacentaout.Yourmidwifemayalsoaskyoutochangeyourposition(forexample,bymovingtoasittingorsquattingposition).Insomecases,youmaybegivenaninjectionofamedicinetohelpyourwombcontract.Ifthesemethodsdon'twork,youmayneedanoperationtoremovetheplacenta. PlacentalabruptionPlacentalabruptionisaseriousconditioninwhichtheplacentastartstocomeawayfromtheinsideofthewombwall.Itcancausestomachpain,bleedingfromthevaginaandfrequentcontractions.Itcanalsoaffectthebaby,increasingtheriskofprematurebirth,growthproblemsandstillbirth.It'snotclearwhatcausesplacentalabruption,butfactorsthatincreasetheriskincludeinjurytotheabdominalarea,smoking,cocaineuseandhighbloodpressure.Ifyou'renearyourduedate,thebabywillneedtobebornstraightawayanda caesareansection mayberecommended.Butifthebaby'sveryprematureandtheabruptionisminor,youmaybekeptinhospitalforcloseobservation.AlwaysspeaktoyourmidwifeorGPifyou'reconcernedaboutanyaspectofyourhealthwhenyou're pregnant.YoucanalsocallNHS111.
