Thisshowisn'tforme(ifthatwasn'tobvious)butigenuinelymeanthis.Ifyoufoundenjoymentinthisshow,i'mhappyforyou.Reallyiam.Itmeansyoustillenjoythistypeofseries.I'mnottheaudienceforthisshowandtoanyonewho(despitemycommentsinthebeginningbeingonthesarcasticside)dosewantmorefromtheirromance(becausethisshowisromancedon'ttrytotellmeotherwise)thentrustmewhenisaythisshowisn'tforyoueither. Bokubenisreallysimpleinitspremiseanddoesn'ttrytobesomethingthatit'snot.ItisaHaremRom-Com.It'snottryingtobereallyprofoundorthoughtprovoking,it'smeanttobeanOtakuselfescapismmechanism.Simple.However,thatdoesn'tmeanthere'snostorytobefoundhere,andthat'swhereinmyopinion,season2makessignificantimprovementsoverthefirst season. Season1ofBokubenwasmoreofaflavouroftheweektypeofexcursionwithNairyukibeingshippedwithoneofthegirlseachweekwithlittleinthewayofactualoverarchingplotdevelopmentoradvancement.Season2improvesonthatwithaveryclearandobviousadvancementoftheploteachweek.Eachepisodedoesbuilduponsomethingandleadintotheothers.Infact,wegetacharacterarcforeachofthegirlsthisseasonthatreallyadssomemuchneededdevelopmentforafewlikeSenpaiandTakemoto.OthermoreestablishedshipslikeFuminoandSenseigettheirscreentimeaswell,butit'swithclearpurpose.Togiveanexample,there'saFuminoarcwhichreallygivesyouimportantbackgroundinformationaboutherandherfamilyandinmyopinion,servesasthehighlightoftheseason. Overall,Bokuben2isconfidentinwhatitis,doesn'ttrytobesomethingit'snot,buildsuponthefoundationwegotinseason1andiseverythingyou'vecometoloveornotlovefromtheseries.Thecharactersarecute,funny,silly,nervousandmostimportantly,theycan'tlearn.Bokubenseason2getsa10/10fromme. Ifyou'reafanofthetypicalhighschoolrom-comgenre,thisshouldcomeasnosurprisethatthe"WaifuWars"thatprettymuchexpandedinrecentyearsisbecomingatrend,andintheworldofBokuBen,thishasn'tchangedwiththetitularMCYuigaNariyuki,andhiswaysoftutelageofthe"bestgirl"raceofSeason1,betweentheshyclassmateRizuOgata,theschoolidolFuminoFuruhashi,andthechildhoodfriendUrukaTakemoto.BUTNOWwithSeason2,eventheclumsyteacherMafuyuKirisuandtheteasingSenpaiAsumiKominamiwantsintoo,because"Whynotaddunsuspectingcharactersthatcouldpotentiallybe"BestGirls"intherunningasidefromallthoseclichésandtropesfromearlier"! Ifyouhaven'twatchedSeason1,SHAMEONYOU,gowatchthatfirstandtrulyexperiencethewholesome"trash"thatistheMCtutorbeingaffectionatelyunconsciously"flirting"oneverygirl,sothatthey'dhavearunningforhis"indirectkiss"firstandforemost.NowwithSeason2,thestakesgethigherasthetrioofgirlsandNariyukiaredeadsetonmakingtheirplaceinuniversity,somethingthatfromtheforeshadowofSeason1,Ogata,FuminoandUrukastillhasawaystogoiftheywannaachieveprogresstouniversityintheirownright(oh,andclaimthetitleof"waifumaterial"statustoo)!AlongwithKirisu-senseiandtheseniorthatisKominami,they'resureNOTmakingYuiga'slifeanybetter,forgoodorforworse,butrathergettinghimconstantlyintohotwater"thinkingofecchi"moments. Imean,comeon,we'realreadybeing"degenerate"weebsforwatchingthisanimebeforeinthefirstplace,andholycow,Season2upstheantebyalongshot,comingintoquestionthegradualcharacterdevelopmentofwhythetrioofgirlswanttoachievewhattheywannabeatthebeginningofSeason1(andthemanga),nottomentionthecallingoftheirlivesonceuniversitysetsintheharshtruth(andthemostpossiblesituation,beingseparatefromNariyuki).This"redthreadoffate"ofthegroupof5Waifusand1pure,naïveofaboywon'tlastforever...butYuigabeingYuiga,hisroleisliketheBuddhistsaying:"Intheend,onlythreethingsmatter:howmuchyouloved,howgentlyyoulived,andhowgracefullyyouletgoofthingsnotmeantforyou.” It'strulyagodsendmessagedownfromHeavenhowNariyukishapeseveryone'sliveswithoutknowinghisimpactofsimplehelpandkindnessthatextendstherangeofhisheartfeltdesirestopushpeoplefurtherandaccomplishthebestofthem.HowcanyounotaffordtolovethehelloutofthisMC? Whilenothinghaschangedintermsofvisualsandanimation,SilverandArvoAnimationdiduseSeason2toimproveandrefinethemistakesofSeason1,whicharealwaysawelcomewhenit'sliterallythesameartstylesandgoodfluidanimationsplicedincomedicgagmomentswhichstillmanagestopaceitstimingswell.ThebiggestchangewouldalwayscomefromthemusicalsideofthingswiththeentirelynewOST.WhileSeason1'sOSTishelmedbythefemaleleadVAs,thesameherecanbesaidfortheOPwhichisstillquality,exceptHalca'sED,whichisquitedecentandOK(thoughhonestlyI'dlovetolistentoanotherEDbythemaswell). MyonlyminorgripewithSeason2isthatwithSeason1'spacingofthefirst40chapters(whichareagreatintroduction),thelatterseasonjustwenthaywireonitsownwithchoosingwhichchaptersandminiarcstoadaptthistime.Tosomeonewhoistrackingboththeanimeandmangaatthesametime,itnervesmetosaythatwhiletheepisodicthemeisprettymuchwhattheanimeadaptationisgunningfor,andtheminiarcsarequitethewelcomewhenitcomestopeoplewantingtoknowwhatmaterialsareadapted(cozit'sagenuinethingnow).
