TypesofTelecentricLensesInordertoachieveatelecentriclensdesign,allofthechiefrays(raysfromanoff-axispointthatpassthroughthecenteroftheaperturestop)havetobeparalleltotheopticalaxisineitherimagespaceorobjectspace,orboth.Foranobjectspacetelecentriclens,thechiefrayswillbeparalleltotheopticaxisontheobject'ssideofthelens(objectspace).Thisisaccomplishedbysettingtheaperturestopatthefrontfocalplaneofthelens,whichresultsinanentrancepupilatinfinity.Sincechiefraysaredirectedtowardsthecenteroftheentrancepupil,thechiefraysontheobjectsideofthelenswillbeparalleltotheopticalaxis.AnexampleofanobjectspacetelecentriclensisshowninFigure1.
