The process of photoengraving is reminiscent of a stencil process; the depth of engraving is not variable as it is in some reist etching systems. FrontPageTitleIndex Photoengraving Inletterpressprinting,aprocessbywhichanacidresistcontainingaphotosensitiveemulsionisadheredtoasheetofmetal,exposedtoafilmnegative,developed,andthenthesurfaceistreatedwithachemicaletchant,whicheatsthroughtheresistquicklyanddissolvesthemetalintheunexposed,non-imageareas,andeatsthroughtheresistmoreslowlyinthemosthighly-exposedimageareas,failingtoetchthemetalintheportionsoftheimagecorrespondingtosolidsandshadows.Theprocessofphotoengravingisreminiscentofastencilprocess;thedepthofengravingisnotvariableasitisinsomereistetchingsystems.Thisprocessresultsinametalreliefplate.
