InCanada,theresponsibilityformanagingandreducingwasteissharedamongfederal,provincial,territorialandmunicipalgovernments. Municipalgovernmentsmanagethecollection,recycling,composting,anddisposalofhouseholdwaste,whileprovincialandterritorialauthoritiesestablishwastereductionpoliciesandprograms,approveandmonitorwastemanagementfacilitiesandoperations. Foritspart,thefederalgovernmentcomplementstheactivitiesoftheotherlevelsofgovernmentbycontrollinginternationalandinterprovincialmovementsofhazardouswasteandhazardousrecyclablematerial,aswellasidentifyingapproachesandbestpracticesthatwillreducepollutantandgreenhousegasemissionsfromthemanagementofwaste. Throughawidevarietyofprograms,thefederalgovernmentprovidesfundingforpilotprojects,communityactivitiesandmajorinfrastructureinordertoreducewastesenttolandfillsandimprovehowCanadamanagesitsresources.Italsocollaborateswithprovincial,territorial,municipalandindigenouspartnerstodevelopandimplementstandardsonmattersofmutualconcernsuchasthemanagementofplasticsandmercuryfromusedfluorescentlights.UndertheCanadianCouncilofMinistersoftheEnvironment(CCME),environmentministersfromthefederal,provincialandterritorialgovernmentsworktogethertoimprovewastereductionpoliciesandpracticesacrossCanada.
