Developedasanindustry-widecompressionstandardforvideointerfacesthatfeatureslowlatencyandvisuallylosslessperformance,DSCiscurrentlyintegratedintostandardsusedforembeddeddisplayinterfaceswithinmobilesystems.TheseincludetheVESAembeddedDisplayPort(eDP™)Standardv1.4bandtheMIPIDisplaySerialInterface(DSI)specificationv1.2andlaterversions.SinceitsinitialintroductioninApril2014,theDSCstandardhasachievedbroadadoptioninsmartphonesandtablets,andwillbeusedinfuturenotebookPCs. TheVESADisplayPort™(DP)1.4aspecificationisthefirstDPstandardtotakeadvantageofDSC1.2b,whichisbackwardcompatiblewithDSC1.1.Aside-by-sidecomparisonofthetwoversionscanbefoundathttp://www.vesa.org/news-events/press-kits/. ThecapabilitiesinDSC1.2ballowthestandardtobeutilizednotonlyformobiledisplays,butalsoforemerginghigh-definitionTVs.Keyfeaturesinclude: Native4:2:0and4:2:2coding –Eliminatestheneedtoconvertpixelsintored,green,blue(RGB)components,whichallowsfordirectcompressionofincomingsub-sampledpixels.Thisenablesmoreefficientcompression(e.g.,2:1forYCbCr4:2:0codingversus3:1withRGBconversion),whichinturnresultsinsuperiorimagequalityfordigitalTVs,whichoftenutilizeYCbCr4:2:0coding. Upto16bitspercolor –Expandsthenumberofbitspercolorthatcanbeused,supportingnativepixelcodingat8,10,12,14and16bitspercolorforinputandoutputformats.DSC1.1supportedonly8,10and12bitspercolor.Theadditionalsupportof14and16bitdepthallowscompletecompatibilitywithexistingtransportsandwidecolordepthpixelformats—enablingthedisplayofveryhighcolordepthcontent. HighDynamicRange(HDR) –HDRTVshowsandmoviesarebecomingavailableforon-linestreaming,andUltraHDBlu-ray™discswithHDRtitlesareexpectedtohitthemarketsoon.BecausethehighercolordepthofHDRrequiresmoredata,theincreasedcompressionefficiencyof4:2:0formatbyDSC1.2aandthroughtheDP1.4atransportspecification(whichrecognizestheBT.2020colorstandard)willbeakeyenablerfordrivingadoptionofHDRTVtechnology—especiallyasresolutionsincreasebeyond4K.
