WhileherhitsinHongKongwerenoticeablyalternative,hertwoMandarinalbumsweremorelyricalandtraditional.CriticsgenerallycreditTaiwaneseproducerYangMing-huangfortheirsuccess. Fourbest-sellingalbumsinCantoneseandMandarin,arecord-breaking18consecutiveconcertsinHongKong,andawidelyacclaimedfilm(ChungkingExpress)madeFayeWongthemosteminentfemaleHongKongsingerinthemid-1990s.Meanwhile,herdistastefortheprofit-orientedHKentertainmentindustrybecamemoreandmoreapparent.ShewasfrequentlyintouchwiththerockcircleinBeijing.Givenhersomewhatreticentandnonchalantpersonality,shewouldsometimesgiveterse,direct,andsomewhatunexpectedanswerswhenaskedpersonalquestionsbytheHKmedia.
