Thedaughterofaminingengineerandarevolutionarymusicsoprano,[10]WangFeiwasbornatPekingUnionMedicalCollegeHospitalinDongchengDistrict,Beijing[11]inthemidstofChina'sCulturalRevolution.[fn1]ShehasanelderbrothernamedWangYi(王弋).[13]Asastudent,Wongalreadywasinvolvedinsingingandattractedinterestfromseveralpublishers[citationneeded].Onoccasions,theschoolhadtohideherartisticactivitiesfromherstrictmother,[14]whoasaprofessionalsawsingingasadead-endcareer.[15]Despitehermother'sopposition,Wongreleased6low-costcoveralbumsfrom1985to1987whilestillinhighschool,allintheformofcassettes,mostlyconsistingofsongsbyherpersonalidol,iconicTaiwanesesingerTeresaTeng.Forthelastoftheseearlyrecordings,theproducerWeiYuanqiangchosethetitleWongFeiCollection,intendingtoshowthatherecognisedadistinctivetalentintheteenager.[16]
In1987,afterbeingacceptedtoXiamenUniversityforcollege,shemigratedtoHongKongtojoinherfather,whohadbeenworkingthereforafewyears.Theplanwasforhertostaythereforayeartofulfillthepermanentresidencyrequirement,andgotoauniversityabroadthereafter.[15]However,sinceWongdidnotknowawordofCantonese,thelanguagespokenintheBritishcolony,sheexperiencedgreatloneliness.[10]Followingabriefmodelingstint,shebegansinginglessonswithTaiSee-Chung(戴思聰),whowasalsofromMainlandChinaandhadpreviouslytutoredHongKongsuperstarsAnitaMui,AndyLau,LeonLaiandAaronKwok.[17]UnderTai'stutelage,the19-year-oldsignedwithCinepolyRecordsafterwinningthirdplaceinanABUsingingcontestin1988.[15]ItwasariskymoveonthepartofChanSiu-Bo,Cinepoly'sgeneralmanager,sinceMainlanderswerestereotypedas"backwards"inHongKong.[18]
Asaresult,CinepolyaskedWongtochangeher"Mainland-sounding"nametoa"sophisticated"stagenameWongJingMan.(HerEnglishnamewastobe"Shirley".)[19]In1989,herdebutalbumShirleyWongsoldover30,000copies[citationneeded]andhelpedherwinbronzeatthe"ChikChakNewArtistAward".[citationneeded]Twomorealbums(EverythingandYou'retheOnlyOne)followed,similarlyfeaturingmanycoversongsbyartistsfromtheUSandJapan.However,theysoldworsethanherdebutalbum,despiterelentlesspromotionsbythecompany.ManyinHongKongperceivedhertobe"backwards",lackingpersonality.
Frustratedwithhercareerdecision,in1991shetravelledtoNewYorkCityforvocalstudiesandculturalexchange.Becauseitwasahurrieddecision,shealsoendedupmissingtheregistrationdeadlineforherclassesinNewYork.FayeWongexplainedin1996,
Iwanderedaround,visitedmuseumsandsatatcafes.Thereweresomanystrange,confident-lookingpeople.Theydidn'tcarewhatotherpeoplethoughtofthem.IfeltIwasoriginallylikethattoo,independentandalittlerebellious.ButinHongKongIlostmyself.Iwasshapedbyothersandbecamelikeamachine,adresshanger.Ihadnopersonalityandnosenseofdirection.[10]
WongreturnedtoHongKongandfoundanewagentinKatieChan,whowouldremainheragentforthenexttwodecades.Thenextalbum,ComingHome,wouldprominentlyfeatureonthecovertheEnglishname"Faye",ahomophonetohergivenChinesename,andtheword"Jing",areferencetoherhometownBeijing.
1992–1993:Risetonotability[edit]
The1992albumComingHomeincorporatedR&BinfluencesandwasachangeinmusicaldirectionfromthemoretraditionalCantopopfareofherearlieralbums.Onesongbyherofthistimewas"FragileWoman",acoverofaJapanesesong"Rouge"originallycomposedbyMiyukiNakajimaandsungbyNaomiChiaki.(ThankstoWong'scover,this1972song—indifferentlanguageversions—wouldintheearly1990sbecomeahugeregionalhitinThailand,VietnamandtherestofSoutheastAsiaandevenTurkey;themostpopularEnglishversionwastitled"Broken-HeartedWoman".)ComingHomealsoincludedherfirstEnglish-languagenumber,"KissesintheWind".Wongstatedina1994concertthatsheverymuchlikedthissong,[20]afterwhichvariouswebsiteslisteditasherpersonalfavourite;[21][22][23]however,ina1998CNNinterviewshedeclinedtonameonefavouritesong,sayingthatthereweretoomany,[24]andin2003shestatedthatshenolongerlikedheroldsongs.[25]
ThecoverforComingHomeprominentlyshowsthename"Faye",andfromthenonshechangedherstagenamebackto"WangFei"(王菲)[citationneeded].In1992–93shealsostarredinTVBshowssuchasFileofJusticeII(壹號皇庭II)andLegendaryRanger(原振俠).
In1993,shewrotetheMandarinlyricsforherballad"NoRegrets"(執迷不悔)whichledmanytopraiseherasagiftedlyricist.InFebruary,itbecamethetitletracktoheralbumNoRegrets.NoRegretsfeaturessoftcontemporarynumbers,afewdancetracksandtwoversionsofthetitleballad:Wong'sMandarinversion,andaCantoneseversion(lyricsbyChenShaoQi).
1993–1994:Alternativestyle[edit]
Hernextalbum100,000Whys(September1993)showedconsiderablealternativemusicinfluencesfromtheWest,includingthepopularsong"ColdWar"(冷戰),acoverof"SilentAllTheseYears"byToriAmos.
FayehasnamedtheScottishpost-punkgroupCocteauTwinsamongherfavouritebands,[24]andtheirinfluencewasclearonhernextCantonesealbum,RandomThoughts(胡思亂想).HerCantoneseversionofTheCranberries'"Dreams"wasfeaturedinWongKar-wai'sfilmChungkingExpress,andgainedlastingpopularity.[26]Besidescoveringsongsandlearningdistinctivevocaltechniques,Wongrecordedherowncompositions"Pledge"(誓言),co-writtenwithex-husbandDouWei,andherfirstandonlyspoken-wordsong"Exit"(出路),whichexpressessomeofherpessimismaboutthefuture.
1994–1995:Mandarinmarket[edit]
BesidestwoCantonesealbumsin1994,WongreleasedtwootheralbumsinMandarininTaiwan,Mystery(迷)andSky(天空).Therunawayhit"I'mWilling"(我願意)inMysterybecamehertrademarkhitintheMandarin-speakingcommunitiesforyears,andhasbeencoveredbyothersingerssuchasGigiLeung,SammiChengandJayChou.Skywasseenbyfansasasuccessfulamalgamofartisticexperimentationandcommercialism.
WhileherhitsinHongKongwerenoticeablyalternative,hertwoMandarinalbumsweremorelyricalandtraditional.CriticsgenerallycreditTaiwaneseproducerYangMing-huangfortheirsuccess.
Fourbest-sellingalbumsinCantoneseandMandarin,arecord-breaking18consecutiveconcertsinHongKong,andawidelyacclaimedfilm(ChungkingExpress)madeFayeWongthemosteminentfemaleHongKongsingerinthemid-1990s.Meanwhile,herdistastefortheprofit-orientedHKentertainmentindustrybecamemoreandmoreapparent.ShewasfrequentlyintouchwiththerockcircleinBeijing.Givenhersomewhatreticentandnonchalantpersonality,shewouldsometimesgiveterse,direct,andsomewhatunexpectedanswerswhenaskedpersonalquestionsbytheHKmedia.
In1995,shereleasedDecadentSoundsofFaye(菲靡靡之音),acoveralbumofsongsoriginallyrecordedbyheridolTeresaTeng,oneofthemostreveredChinesesingersofthe20thcentury.AduetwithTengwasplannedforthealbum,butunfortunatelyshediedbeforethiscouldberecorded.[27]DecadentSoundssoldwelldespiteinitialnegativecriticism,andhascometoberecognisedasanexampleofimaginativecoveringbyrecentcritics.
FayeWongalongwithherthenyet-to-behusbandandrockmusiciconDouWei,werethewinnerandtherunner-uptothe1995MTVInternationalViewer'sChoiceAward;claimingfirstandsecond-placerespectivelywiththemusicvideos"Chess"and"BlackDream".
InDecember,shereleasedherCantonesealbumDi-DarwhichmixesanalternativeyodellingstylewithatouchofIndianandMiddleEasternflavour.Thisalbumwasasuccess,partlybecauseitwassodifferentfromthemainstreamCantopopmusic,but—ironically—acoupleofverytraditionalromanticsongstoppedthecharts.
1996:RestlessandCinepolyEPs[edit]
1996sawthereleaseofwhatmanywouldconsiderherboldestandmostartisticallycoherentefforttodate,Fuzao(浮躁),usuallytranslatedasRestlessorImpatience.ThiswasherlastalbumwithCinepoly,andWongfeltshecouldtakemoreartisticrisks.Thealbumcontainsmainlyherowncompositions,withanaestheticinspiredbytheCocteauTwins,whopennedtwooriginalsongsforthealbum,"Fracture"(分裂)and"RepressingHappiness"(掃興).AsWonghadcoveredtheirworkin1994,shehadestablishedaremoteworkingrelationshipwiththem—evenlayingdownvocalsforaspecialduetversionof"Serpentskirt"ontheAsianreleaseofthegroup's1996album,MilkAndKisses.
AlthoughthealbumwasWong'spersonalfavourite,theresponsefromHongKongandTaiwanwaslesssupportive.ManyfanswhoenjoyedherpreviousthreeMandarinalbumsturnedtheirbackonRestless,whichtheyconsideredtobetooalternativeandself-absorbed.Therewerefewballadswhichwereradio-friendlyandsomebecamedisenchantedwithFaye'sexperimentalstyleofrecording.However,hardcorefans,knownasFayenatics,[28]adoredthealbumanditbecameaculthit.Wonghasnotreleasedanotherfullyartisticalbumsince.Aftertherelease,WongbecamethesecondChineseartist(afterGongLi)—andthefirstChinesesinger—tobefeaturedonthecoverofTimemagazine.[29]
From1993to1995,CinepolyreleasedanEPofWong'ssongseachyear:LikeWind(如風),FayeDisc(菲碟),andOnePerson,TwoRoles(一人分飾兩角).Thenin1996–97,sherecordedtenoriginalsongsinCantoneseallwrittenbylyricistLinXi(林夕)andvariouscomposers,suchasWongKaKeung,AdrianChan,andChanXiaoXia,beforeherdeparturefromCinepoly.AfterhercontractwithCinepolyexpired,thecompanyreleasedeightofthesesongsinthetwosubsequentEPsentitledToy(玩具)andHelpingYourself(自便).AlthoughtheEPscontainednewsongs—balladhitslike"Undercurrent"(暗湧),"Date"(約定),and"OnTime"(守時)—andwerewelcomedbyfans,theyreceivedlukewarmcriticalresponses.Theothertwosongswereincludedinlatercompilations;thelasttobereleasedwas"Scary"(心驚膽顫)in2002.
1997:EMIandFayeWong[edit]
WongsignedfortherecordinggiantEMIin1997afterherfirstdaughterwasborn,inacontractworthHK$60million(approx.US$7.7million),torelease55songsinfivealbums.WhilemostofherearlieralbumsweresunginCantonese,WonghassincesungalmostexclusivelyinMandarin,hermothertongue,althoughsherecordedCantoneseversionsofacoupleofsongsineachofherlastfouralbumswithEMItopleaseherHongKongaudience.Havinggonethroughaperiodofexperimentation,Wongstatedthatshewishedtomake"musicthatIlike.Idonotcareifothersdon't,thoughIwouldbedelightediftheydo".
HerfirstalbumwithEMIwasFayeWong(王菲),releasedinautumn1997.Criticsexpectinganotherartisticbreakthroughafter1996'sRestlessnessfound—muchtotheirdismay—amuchmoreinoffensiveandcommerciallyorientedmusicalalbum.SimonRaymondeandRobinGuthrieoftheCocteauTwinswrotetwooriginalcompositionsforthealbum,butonlyone,"TheAmusementPark"(娛樂場),wasused.ThisreleaseincludedanacousticcoveroftheCocteauTwins'"RilkeanHeart",renamed"Nostalgia"(懷念).[30]
Thisalbumisfilledwithfeelingsoflethargy,languoranddisengagement,yetmostofthetrackssoundwarmandsweet,asopposedtothosepiquantself-centeredonesbeforehermotherhood.Reportersnoticedthatshebegantosmilemoreofteninpublicandwasnotasicyoraloofasbefore.However,thealbumwasreleasedduringtheAsianfinancialcrisiswhichsweptEastandSoutheastAsia.Wong'soldcompanyCinepoly,whichretainsthecopyrightonherpreviousrecords,releasedaMandarincompilationatthesametimein1997tocounteracthernewEMIalbum(andindeedoutperformedit).Later,CinepolywouldreleasetwocompilationseachyeartocompetewithFaye'snewreleases,atacticwhichhascomeunderfirefromherinternationalfans.FayeWongdidnotsellwellinHongKong,butdidquitewellinTaiwanandmainlandChina.AlthoughWonghadgarneredsomepopularitywithher4previousMandarinalbums,itwasreallythissweetyetslightlyalternativealbumwhichhadtheMainlandChineseaudiencelistening.HerprofilebegantorisesharplyinAsia.
1998:MainlandChina[edit]
In1997singerNaYingsignedwithEMIandstruckalastingfriendshipwithWong.NahadbeenaregularattheannualCCTVNewYear'sGala,thehighest-watchedTVshowinMainlandChina,andsheinvitedWongtodoaduetwithherontheupcomingshowin1998.Thecollaborationbythe"MainlandDiva"and"HongKongDiva",titled"Let'sMeetin1998",becameaninstanthitandarguablythemostplayedsonginMainlandChinathatyear.[31]Thankstothisexposure[fn2],inlate1998WongfinallyheldherfirstconcertinhernativeMainlandChina,andcontinuedhertourin9cities.
SingandPlay(唱遊)wasreleasedinOctober,andcontainedfoursongscomposedbyFaye:theopeningtrack"EmotionalLife","Face","ALittleClever"and"Tong"(bothwrittenforherdaughter,thelatterproducedbyDouWei).Amongstothersongswere"GiveUpHalfway"(sungbothinMandarinandCantonese),whichwasoneofthemorecommerciallysuccessfultracksfromthealbum,alongwiththesuccessfulballad"RedBean"(紅豆).
ItwasthebestsellingChinesealbuminSingaporein1999.TogetherwithLovers&StrangersandthecompilationalbumWishingWeLastForever,itgaveFayeWong3albumsintheSingaporetop10sellingChinesealbumsof1999,[33]makingheroneofthebestsellingartistsinSingaporein1999.[34]
InJapan,thealbumsoldcloseto90,000copiesinthefirstthreemonthsafteritsrelease.[35]
1999:VenturingintoJapan[edit]
ThevideogameFinalFantasyVIIIwasreleasedinJapaninFebruary1999,forwhichFayeWongrecordedtheballad"EyesonMe"inEnglish.ItwasthefirsttimethataJapanesevideogamefeaturedaChinesesingerforitstheme.The"EyesonMe"singlesoldover335,620copiesinJapanand500,000worldwide,[36]makingitthebest-sellingvideogamemusicdisctothatdate,andwinning"SongoftheYear(WesternMusic)"atthe14thAnnualJapanGoldDiscAwards.[37][38]WhenthegamewasreleasedinNorthAmericalaterthatyear,thethemesongbecameverypopularamonggamersintheWest;whileitwasnotamainstreamhitthere(asWonghadnodesiretoexplorethesemarkets),shegainedmanyfanswhowerenotpreviouslyfamiliarwithhermusic.[39]
InMarch,sheheldtwoconcertsinNipponBudokan,withticketsforthefirstshowon11Marchbeingsoldoutinonedayandanextrashowaddedon12March;[35]shewasthefirstChinesesingertoperforminthatvenue.[40]Earlierintheyear,Pepsi-ColahadmadeWongaspokesperson,andaftertheseconcertssheshotthepromotionalmusicvideofor"Spectacular"(精彩),whichPepsiusedincommercials.
ThealbumLovers&Strangers(只愛陌生人)wasreleasedinlateSeptember,[41]andsoldover800,000copies,toppingthechartsinHongKong,MainlandChina,Taiwan,SingaporeandMalaysia.[42]ThiswasherfirstalbumaftershepartedfromherhusbandDouWei,andherfirstwithoutanymusicalcollaborationswithhimsincetheirrelationshipbegan.ThetitletrackwasfeaturedinSylvesterStallone'sremakeofGetCarter.WongalsobecameaspokespersonforJPhoneinOctober,performinginseveralcommercialswhichairedinJapan.
Inaddition,shebeganfilmingfor2046inAugust,aprojectshewouldpursueonandoffoverthenextfewyearswhenherschedulepermitted.
2000:Fable[edit]
ThenewmillenniumsawashiftinWong'smusicalcareerwiththealbumFable(寓言).Theprominentfeatureofthisalbumisitssegregatedanddistinguishablehalves—songsinthefirsthalfofthealbumrunninginanalmostcontinuousmannerandinaformatthatisakintoasong-cycle,andthesecondhalfofdiscrete,chart-friendlynumbers.Thealbumitselfderivesitsartisticmeritsfromthefirsthalf,notableforitsuniquethematicandcontinuoussequencingofsongsunprecedentedintheChinesemusicindustry.Thethemeitselfisambiguousandthelyricssubjecttomultipleinterpretations,thoughitisquitecertainthatthethemeofFableformsthemainthematicreference,derivedfromthemotivicelementsoftheprinceandprincessinfablesandfairytalesofEuropeanorigins.Elementsofspirituality,metaphysicsandBuddhismholdanimportantplaceinthelyricsaswell,pennedbyLinXiwhohasbythen,beenunanimouslyidentifiedasFaye'slyricistparexcellence.Musicallythearrangementsdisplayinfluencesofdrumandbass,electronica,east-westcollageandlushstringorchestralinfusions.

2001–2004:FayeWongandToLove[edit]

Bythistime,Fayehadforgedafamousalliancewithproducer/musicianZhangYadong(張亞東)andlyricistLinXi(林夕),oftenreferredtobytheHKpublicasthe'irontriangle'.However,duetoZhangYadong'sunavailabilityduringthisperiod(hewasengagedonotherprojects),FayedecidedtotreatthislastalbumwithEMIasanexperimentwherebyshewouldcollaboratewithnewproducers/musicians/lyricistsand'seewhattheirvisionofherwillbe'.
Nevertheless,theresponsefromthepublicandcriticsalikewerelukewarmatbest.Fayeherselfadmittedthatshewasnottotallysatisfiedwithsometracks,namelythoseproducedbyTaiwan'fatherofrock'WuBai,[citationneeded]whichhadanindustrialelectronicaflavourreminiscentofKarenMok's'GoldenFlower'album.Shecitedthetwofolk-stylesongswrittenbySingaporeansinger-songwriterTanyaChuaasherfavouritepicksonheralbum.ThesongthatgeneratedmostnoisefromthepressturnedouttobeVertigo(迷魂記),aballadpennedbyformerloveNicholasTse.FayeWong(王菲)reachednumber14ontheJapanOriconcharts.
