BellPottingeroperationsinIraq[edit] TheBureauworkingwiththeSundayTimesrevealedonOctober2,2016thatthePentagonpaidBritishPRfirmBellPottinger$540milliontocreatefaketerroristvideos,fakenewsarticlesforArabnewschannelsandpropagandavideos.[18][19] AninvestigationbyAbigailFieldingSmithandCroftonBlackrevealedthedetailsofthemultimillion-poundoperation.BellPottingerwaspaidbytheUSDepartmentofDefence(DoD)forfivecontractsfromMay2007toDecember2011,accordingtoTheTimesandtheBureau.[20][21] LordBellconfirmedBellPottingerreportedtothePentagon,theCIAandtheU.S.NationalSecurityCouncilonitsworkinIraq.[citationneeded] Deathsfromantibioticresistance[edit] TheBureauisrunningacontinuinginvestigationintothethreatposedbyantibioticresistantbacteria.InDecember2016MadlenDaviesworkingwiththeSundayTelegraphrevealedthatsuperbugswerekillingatleasttwiceasmanypeopleasthegovernmentestimated.[22]InOctober2016,AndrewWasleyworkingwiththeGuardianrevealedthatporkcontaminatedwithMRSAwasbeingsoldatAsdaandSainsburys.[23] Covertdronewar[edit] TheBureaumonitorsdronestrikecasualtiesinPakistan,YemenandSomalia.InYemenandSomalia,thesefiguresalsoincludevictimsofdronestrikes,airstrikes,missileattacksandgroundoperations.Unlikeotherorganisationsthattracksuchdeaths,theBureaufocusesonidentifyingnon-militantdeaths,includingchildren.[24]Thedatafromthisresearchispublishedonline.[25]JackSerlewasoneofthreeBureaureporterswhowontheMarthaGellhornPrizeforJournalismin2013for"theirresearchintoBarackObama’sdronewarsandtheirconsequencesforcivilians".[26] Binaryoptions[edit] Aseriesofarticlesin2016writtenbyMelanieNewmanexposedthe"realwolvesofWallStreet"involvedinbinaryoptionsfraud.AccordingtotheNationalFraudIntelligenceBureau'sheadofcrime,DetectiveChiefInspectorAndyFyfe,thisisthebiggestfraudbeingperpetratedagainstBritishtargetstodaywithpolicereceivinganaverageoftworeportsofbinarytradingfraudaday,withtheaverageinvestorlosing£16,000.Fyfedescribedthisas"justthetipoftheiceberg"becausemostofthefraudsarenotreportedtothepolicebecausethefraudstersareusuallylocatedabroad.[27][28] Jointenterprise[edit] InFebruary2016,theUKSupremeCourtruledthatthelawon"jointenterprise"inmurdercases,whichallowsforseveralpeopletobechargedwiththesameoffenceeventhoughtheymayhaveplayedverydifferentrolesinthecrime,hadbeenwronglyinterpreted.[29]Thisfollowedalong-runningBureauinvestigationintojointenterprise.[30]TheBureaufoundthatblackBritishmenweremorethanthreetimesaslikelytobeservinglifesentencesasaresultofajointenterpriseconvictionthanthoseintheprisonpopulationoverall.[31]ThreeBureaureporters–MaeveMcClenaghan,MelanieMcFadyeanandRachelStevenson–wonthe2013–14BarCouncilLegalReportingAwardforthecoverage.[32] Europe'smissingmillions[edit] AninvestigationincollaborationwiththeFinancialTimesintohowtheEuropeanUnionstructuralfundswereused,andwhetherthepolicywasachievingwhatitsetouttodo.[33]Itfoundthatmillionsofeuroswerebeingsiphonedoffbyorganisedcrimesyndicates,andthatmoneywasbeingusedtosupportmultinationalcorporationsinsteadofsmallandmedium-sizedbusinesses,includinghelptofinanceaBritishAmericanTobaccocigarettefactory.[33] TheBureauco-producedanepisodeofFileon4withtheBBConthestory[34]whichreceivedtheUACESReportingEuropePrize.[35] Lobbying'shiddeninfluence[edit] PublicrelationsfirmBellPottingerwerethecentreofaBureaucovertfilmingoperationpublishedinTheIndependent.InthefootageseniorexecutivesclaimthattheycangetUKprimeministerDavidCamerontospeaktotheChinesepremieronbehalfofoneoftheirclientswithin24hours,andthattheyhaveateamwhich"sorts"negativeWikipediacoverage.[36] BellPottingersubsequentlyfiledacomplaintwiththePressComplaintsCommissionabouttheinvestigation,whichwasrejected.[37] Deathsinpolicecustody[edit] AninvestigationincollaborationwithTheIndependentfoundthatthenumberofpeoplewhohaddiedafterbeingforciblyrestrainedwhilstinpolicecustodywashigherthanofficialfiguresshowed.Thiswasduetotheexclusionofanyonewhohaddiedfollowingrestraintbuthadnotatthatpointbeenformallyarrested.[38]TheBureaualsoreportedtheirfindingswiththeBBCinanepisodeofFileon4.[39] ThestorywonanAmnestyInternationalMediaAward.[40] Iraqwarlogs[edit] TheIraqwarlogswere391,832classifiedUnitedStatesArmyfieldreportsleakedtoWikiLeaks,[41]whichsharedthemwithanumberofnewsorganisations,includingtheBureau,beforepublishingthemonlineintheirentirety.[42]TheBureauworkedwithAlJazeera[43]andChannel4[44]toanalysethedocumentswhichdetailtorture,summaryexecutions,andwarcrimescarriedoutbyUSforces.[45] TheBureau'sreportingreceivedanAmnestyInternationalMediaAward.[46] RussiaReport[edit] In2019,theBureauofInvestigativeJournalismstartedacrowdfundingexercisetoraisefundsforlegalactiontoforcetheBritishgovernmenttoreleasethe"RussiaReport"detailingtheIntelligenceandSecurityCommittee'sinvestigationintoRussianinterferenceinthe2016Brexitreferendum.[47] Criticism[edit] TheBureauwasseriouslycriticisedaftertheNewsnightMcAlpineaffairinNovember2012.BBCNewsnightbroadcastaninvestigationoftheNorthWaleschildabusescandal.ThereporterwasAngusSticklerwhohadbeensecondedtotheBBCbytheBureau.Stickler'sbroadcastreportincludedclaimsthataprominent,butunnamed,formerConservativepoliticianhadsexuallyabusedchildrenduringthe1970s.[48]UsersofTwitterandothersocialmediaimmediatelyidentifiedhimasLordMcAlpine.AfterTheGuardianreportedthatitwasmistakenidentity,LordMcAlpineissuedastrongdenial.[49]Theaccuserunreservedlyapologised,admittingthat,assoonashesawaphotographoftheindividual,herealisedhehadbeenmistaken.[50]BBCdirector-generalGeorgeEntwistleresignedlaterthatday.[48]TheBureau'sManagingEditorIanOvertonandAngusStickleralsoresigned.
