In1988,theKinship'smeteorcrashesinChester'sMill.TeenagersMelanie,Pauline,SamandLylefindthemeteorinthemiddleofthewoods.Astheyapproachit,fourglowinghandprintsappear,oneoneachsideofthemeteor.Whenthefourplacetheirhandsonthemeteor,itopens,revealingaglowingpinkegg.Attractedbytheegg,Melaniepicksitup.However,Lylepushesherintothemeteor,killingherandstoppingtheKinship'sinfectionprocess.Melanie'sfriendsburyherandthealienegg,swearingnevertotalkabouttheincidentagain. In2013,twoarchaeologists,ChristineandEva,searchforanintactegg,whichtheybelievetobelocatedinChester'sMill.Theyworkforalargeenergycompanycalled"Aktaion,"whichhasstudiedothereggsthatcrashedtoEarth.Alloftheothereggsweredamagedbytheirimpact. ChristineandEvafindtheintactegg.AsChristineholdsit,theinfectionprocessbegins.Alargepinkexplosionoccurs,andadomelowersaroundthem,withamini-domedescendingovertheegg.ChristineandEvaaresuckedintoalargecaveandcocooned. Inseason3,ChristineresurrectsMelanie,whomChristineusestolurethetownspeopleintothecavessotheycanbecocoonedandTheKinshipcaninfectthem.Halfwaythroughthetransferprocess,BigJimbreakstheegg,preventingafullinfection.Overtime,thetownspeoplebecomeabsorbedbyTheKinship,exceptforafewwhofightthealiensandtrytoescape.TheseremnantsofthetownspeopleareknownasTheResistance:Julia,BigJim,Joe,Norrie,Hunter,Barbie,andLily,anemployeeofAktaion.
