1.WageInequality
Overthelast30years,wageinequalityintheUnitedStateshasincreasedsubstantially,withtheoveralllevelofinequalitynowapproachingtheextremelevelthatprevailedpriortotheGreatDepression.Thisgeneralcharacterizationoftheinequalitytrendoversimplifies,though,theactualpatternofchange:Thechartbelowshowsthatthetrendatthetopoftheincomedistribution(the“uppertail”)isnotexactlythesameasthetrendatthebottomofthedistribution(the“lowertail”).“Lower-tail”inequalityismeasuredherebytakingtheratioofwagesatthemiddleoftheincomedistribution(i.e.,the50thpercentile)tothosenearthebottomofthedistribution(i.e.,the10thpercentile);“upper-tail”inequalityismeasuredbytakingtheratioofwagesnearthetopofthedistribution(i.e.,the90thpercentile)tothoseatthemiddleofthedistribution(i.e.,the50thpercentileofworkers).Wefindthatlower-tailinequalityrosesharplyinthe1980sandcontractedsomewhatthereafter,whileupper-tailinequalityhasincreasedsteadilysince1980.

RecentdecadeshaveseenaclearincreaseinthedifferencebetweenCEOcompensationandthatoftheaverageworkerinmanufacturingor“production.”CEOsin1965made24timesmorethantheaverageproductionworker,whereasin2009theymade185timesmore.ThischartshowshowthisratiobetweenthecompensationofCEOsandproductionworkerstookoffinthe1980s.

8.RacialDiscrimination
Racialdiscriminationcontinuestobeinthelabormarket.AnexperimentcarriedoutinChicagoandBostonduring2001and2002showsthatresumeswith“white-sounding”names,whethermaleorfemale,weremuchmorelikelytoresultincallbacksforinterviewsthanwerethosewith“black-sounding”names(eventhoughtheresumeswereotherwiseidentical).
