ThehistoryoftheMeichuGamesgoesbacktothe1960s.AftertheendoftheChineseCivilWarin1949,NationalTsingHuaUniversityandNationalYangMingChiaoTungUniversitywerebothrelocatedinHsinchu,Taiwanandbecameneighbors.Thegeographicandacademicclosenesspromptedmanyintellectualandsocialexchangesbetweentwouniversities. In1966,aninformaltournamentwasheld.Thearrangementoftheformalevent,however,wasnotinstitutionalizeduntil1968,whenChianFeng,anexecutiveofficerofNTHUstudentactivitycenter,receivedthepermissionfromtheuniversityauthoritytoplansporteventsforNTHUandNCTUstudentsmodelingaftertheOxfordandCambridgeBoatRace.
