WhenIsharedmythoughtsabouttheword“housewife”withmyfriendsandacquaintances,mostofthemagreedwithmeandexpressedthattheyweretrue,beingthanklesstotheirmothers,wives,sistersanddaughters,withoutgivingitasecondthought. Iwantasignificantchangeinourattitudeandthathastostartbychangingthewordweuseforaddressingwomenwhodohouseholdchores. Homemaker,nothousewife!There’saslightdifferencebetweenahousewifeandhomemaker,mainlyinitsusageandspirit.Rather,ahousewifedoesnotmeananything.  Thereisamistakeinnotonlyitsusagebutalsoitsformation.AccordingtotheOxfordDictionary,ahousewifeisamarriedwomanwhosemainoccupationiscaringforherfamily,managinghouseholdaffairs,anddoinghousework. There’salotofdebateontheconventionofreplacinghousewifewithhomemaker.Itseemslogicaltoquestionwhethersayinghomemakers,insteadofahousewife,willleadtoachangeinourattitudetowardswomenmanaginghousework.  Thechancesare50-50.Agreed,labelsarestifling.But,ifthat’showwe’resupposedtodefineourselves,let’schooseanencompassingtermthatdefinesapersontotheirfullestcapabilities.
