Withoutgettingintoalongdrawnoutexplanationofwhatbulgeandrollisandwhyitworks,itisessentiallythecurvatureonthefaceofawoodthatimpartsoppositespinonoffcentrehitsinordertotryandkeepthemstraighter.Thishasbeenafeatureofwoodssince1888andthebenefitisalsoknownasgeareffect. Forthelast4yearsTaylorMadehasbeeninvestigatingthisandrealisedthatmostgolfershitthefaceeitherlowintheheelorhighinthetoeiftheyarenothittingitinthemiddle. ThisisnotexactlyearthshatteringnewsbutTaylorMaderealisedthatiftheycouldalterthecurvatureofthefaceintheseareasthatitwouldincreasethegeareffectandkeeptheballstraighter.TheresultisthereforetheTwistFace. Aboveisthelargerdemoversiontheygavemeatthelaunchtoillustratethis,butinrealitythecurvatureofthefaceishardlynoticeableandbestseenlookingdownfromthecrownoftheclub. IfyouhittheballhighinthetoethenthefaceclosesandreducesspinsotheTwistFaceismoreopeninthisareatoaddloftandincreasespinwhichshouldstraightenballflightandreducethelossofdistance. Theoppositeappliesforheelshotswhichaddspinasthefaceisopenanditgoeshighandright.TheclosedTwistFacesectionintheheelareaaddsspinandreduceslaunchtoimproveperformanceinthesameway. ThishadtobecheckedoutandwiththeM3driverdownataddresstheleadingedgelooksjustlikeanyotherdrivertobefair. ThereisadifferentlooknowonthecrowntothepreviousM12017driverwherethewhitesectionisnowsilverandslimmerwhichIthinklooksbetter. It'snotthefirsttimeTaylorMadehasusedsilveronadriverandyougetabonuspointifyourememberthatitwastheSLDRSdriverthatlastusedthiscolouronthecrown. Thereisstillthecontrastwiththeblackfaceforalignmentandtheblackofthecarboncrownwhichcomprises5layersofcarbonandislighterandthinnerthanbefore. TheM3drivercomeswithaMitsubishiTenseishaftasstandard,butforafaircomparisononGC2IusedtheProjectXHzrdusYellowthatIhadbeenfittedintofortheM1drivertocomparetheheads. TheusualTaylorMadeadjustablehoselispresentallowingyoutochangeloftby+/-2°andthatenabledthechangingoftheshafts. Aswellastheimprovedlooks,thesoundisalsoalittlebetter,beingabitlowerpitchedandmoresolid. ComparedtotheM1theTaylorMadeM3driverwitha9.5°headadjustedonenotchupto10.5°wascarryingit6yardslongerastheballspeedwasupby4mph,thelaunchdownadegreeandthespinwasup260rpm. HowevertheOfflinenumberwasdownfrom10yardsrighttoalmoststraightonaverage,sotheTwistFacewasreducingtheeffectofmyoffcentrehitsandthiswasreflectedinthedispersionpatterntoo. TheballspeedincreasecouldbeduetotheinclusionoftheHammerheadSlot,whichisthefirsttimeTaylorMadehasputaslotintheirpremiumadjustabledriver,providingyouexcludethepseudoslotofthetrackontheSLDR. ThecentralSpeedPocketismoreflexibleandnowflankedbyribsthatbreakitintothreesectionsandgiveitsomestrength,allowingtheHammerheadslottobe100mmor22%longerthanpreviousM2driverslots. FromhereoninitwastimetofinetunetheM3driverusingthetwo11gadjustableweightsthatarenowarrangedintheY-Track. Thisisasingleflattrackthatreplacesthedoubletrackofbeforeandthe'stock'positionisoneweightfrontandoneinthebackofthestraightsection. Movingbothweightstothefrontgaveayardmoredistancecarrybutwithalowerflightandalittlemorespin. TheTaylorMadefitterIwasworkingwithsuggestedchangingtheheadloftto9.5°totryandincreasetheballspeedanddropthespinalittle. ThedecisionwasthenalsomadetohaveoneweightinthefrontandoneinthebackdrawpositionoftheY-Tracktoaddlaunchandcreateadrawbias. Thestraighterfacenotonlycreatedabitmoreballspeedbutalsoaslightlyhigherflightandwiththelaunchandspinaboutthesame,thisthencreatedthelongestcarryandtotaldistance. Mypoorshotisafadeanywaysothefadesettingwasnotformeasyoucansee,withtheextraspinrobbingmeofdistanceandseeingtheballgofurtherright.Butatleastyouknowitworksifyouareadraweroftheball! Thefinalresultsofthesesettingsandmanyotherinbetweenwereallwithinafewyardsofeachotherandtherealityisthattherewillprobablybeseveralcombinationsofheadloft,shafttype,hoselloftandweightpositionsthatwouldprobablygiveyouthebestresults. FindingthemmightbetheissueastheY-Trackweightscanbetightenedinanypositionsogettingafinalnumberonpossiblecombinationsisalmostimpossible,butit’salot. Ifyouneedtoreducespinfurtherthenthereisalsoasmaller440cversionoftheM3headavailabletooin9°and10°. HoweverwhatwaskeyaboutthefinalsetupIendedupwithwasthatnotonlyweremybestshotsalittlelonger,butthatmyoffcentrestrikesweregoingstraighterandfurtherthanwiththeM1. ThisisobviouslythekeymessageoftheTwistFaceandM3storyandasdriversgetlongerthenmaintainingballspeedbymakingthemmoreforgivingisgoingtothebethewayforward. TheheadhasahorizontalMOIof5000whichishighbytoday’sstandardsandshowshowfarheaddesignhascomesincethesenumberswereseenonlyinsquaredrivers. Itwasalsolongerformeandmy100mph+swingthantheTaylorMadeM4driverbecausetheadjustabilityenabledmetodropthespinandgetthelaunchconditionssetuptodelivermoredistance.HoweverthereisapricepremiumfortheM3overtheM4of£110/$70,whichisabitofapenaltyifyoureallyneedM3,soanygainwillhavetobeworthit. IfyouarealreadyhaveanM1andarereasonablyaccuratewithitthenitwouldstillbeworthcomparingittoanM3toseeifyourworstshotsarebetter.IfyouaresomeonewholikesabitofasprayorhasapronouncedfadeordrawthentheTaylorMadeM3TwistFacecouldsaveyourpartnersfromhavingtolookaway.
