u’retellingmeSteveJobswasalegendaryCEObecausehewasgreatatdelegating?Thisisallyouneedtoknowaboutthisandpracticallyeveryothermanagementbook.Inmyopinion,whateverybookaboutmanagementmissesisthatmanagementisn’tnearlyasimportantasamanagerthinksitis.Ifyouwanttobeagreatmanager,provideyourguidanceandgetoutoftheway.Noonewantstobemanaged.Peoplewanttobelead.RealleaderslikeSteveJobsandElonMusk,notoriousforbeingbrutalbosses,havesucceededmostlikelyinspiteoftheirmanagementskills.Peoplelikethemsucceedbecausetheybringoutthebestintheirteamandinspireotherstogowherenooneelsehasgonebefore.Theyseektocreateaworldthatdoesn’tyetexistandbringothersalongfortheride.Thisisthedifferencebetweenamanagerandaleader.Ofcoursetaskslikedelegation,planning,andrunningeffectivemeetingsplayarole,butnooneisbuyingthattheywerethecruxofAndyGrove’ssuccess.Thisisalessonthatmanypeopleneverlearn.Mostpeople,eventheuberrichandsuccessful,areterribleatunderstandingwhytheysucceededinagivendomain.Theyoftenjustpickthethingsthatareobviousandeasytoquantify.Ithinkit’snotastretchtothinkthatI’llbeinapositionofleadershipatsomepointinmylife.Butwhenthatdaycomes,IwillnotbeusinganythingIlearnedfromHighOutputManagement.
