Untilrecently,IneverrealizedhowmanyArmytermscrossoverintoparentingandjusthoweffectivetheycanbe.Ratherthanhavingahugeyellingsession(Imeandiscussion),usingthesesixArmyphraseshelpsusreshapeourdayssothattheyarealittlelessloudandalotmoreproductive. 1.Movewithapurpose Anybasictraineeor ROTC cadetcanrememberthedaysofseniornoncommissionedofficersyellingatthemto“Movewithapurpose!”Itbasicallymeanstowalkquickly,efficientlyandwithoutrunning,asthesituationmaybetoodangerousforrunning.Iamconstantlysayingthistomychildren.Walkinginparkinglotswiththreekidsischallenging-- onewantstorun,oneismovingatasnail’spaceandtheotheriscryingaboutwhoknowswhat.GettingthemtoallwalkatthesamepacetoourdestinationiskeytomysanityandIamsureitisthekeytoyoursaswell. 2.Lockitup ThisisusuallyreservedforunrulyprivatesbutIhavetoldmychildrento“Lockitup”onmorethanoneoccasion.Cryingfornoreason?Yellinginsteadofusinganinsidevoice?Nothankyou.Itellthemtolockitupandmoveon.Inamilitarysetting,itusuallymeanstostandatattentionandbequietbutsincekidswillbekids,Ireservethisphrasefortellingthemtocheckthevolumelevelontheirvoiceandteachthemtoself-regulatewhenit’sappropriatetoyellandwhenitistimetobequiet.Ioftenusethisontheplaygroundifoneofmykidsfallsdownandcriesoveranon-injury:Lockitupandkeepplaying.Unlessalimbneedstobeamputated,Iamsureyouwillbefinesogobacktoplayingwithyourfriends. 3.I’mwatchingyou NotsomuchanArmyphrase,morelikemakinguseoftheclassichandandarmsignal.Pointingtwofingersatmyeyesandthenturningthefingerstowardmykids,sometimesevensaying,“I’mwatchingyou,”isagreatremindertoyourkidsthattheyneedtorethinktheircurrentactivity.Maybetheyaremakingamessatatimewhereamesswouldnotbeappreciatedormaybetheyarejustdoingsomethingunsafe. Nothingmakesachildstopwhattheyaredoingfasterthanbeingremindedthattheyarebeingwatched.Andsinceitismostlynon-verbal,youcanshootyourkidoneoftheseinacrowdedplacesothattheycanmakeabetterchoice. 4.Moveout Thisphraseworksinmorethanoneway.Whenwearegettingreadytoheadoutfortheday’sactivityandeveryonehasdonetheirpottybreakandshoesareon,itistimeto“Moveout!”Getinthecarandlet’sgoseewhatadventuresarewaitingforus.But“Moveout”isnotallgood.Sometimestheyhearitwhentheyarebeingtoldtostopplayinganddotheirchores.“Didyoucleanyourroom?No?Moveout!”Dotheyalwaysgothefirsttimearound?Ofcoursenot,theyarekidsbuttheywilleventuallygoandthetoyswillgetcleaned. 5.Standby MyhusbandisAirborne,andassuchhaslearnedaninterestingwayofcountingdown.Whenwearegettingreadytoleaveforthedayorevenjustahead’supforwhendinner’salmostready,itisnotuncommontohearsomeonecallout“Tenminutes!”andthena“Standby.”Thisisagreatwaytohelpkidswithtransitioningfromoneactivitytothenextbecauseitgivesthemahead’supthatsoon,theywillhavetomoveontosomethingelse. 6.Sayagain Neversay“repeat”ontheradio.Neversayitathomeeither.WhenmykidsormyhusbandsayssomethingthatIdonothearorunderstand,itisnotuncommonforustosay“Sayagain?”Evenbetter,ifsomeonesaystheyaregoingtodosomethingtheyknowisnaughty,aquick“Sayagain?”usuallyisenoughtoderailwhateverschemewasturningintheirheads. Ofcourse,theclassicArmyphrasesareoftenechoedinthehouseaswell:Roger,Hooah,Copy,buttheseadditionalphrasesareagreatwaytohopefullyencourageyourchildrentostopanegativebehaviorandturnitintoapositiveonewithouttearsoryellingoneitherparty’spart.Andcuttingdownonunnecessarytearsistheultimategoal,isn’tit?
