InEuropeanpoliticalphilosophy,thejurisdictionofpoliticalauthority,thelocationofsovereignty,thebalancingofnotionsoffreedomandauthority,[8]andtherequirementsofpoliticalobligationshavebeencorequestionsfromthetimeofPlatoandAristotletothepresent.Mostdemocraticsocietiesareengagedinanongoingdiscussionregardingthelegitimateextentoftheexerciseofgovernmentalauthority.IntheUnitedStates,forinstance,thereisaprevailingbeliefthatthepoliticalsystemasinstitutedbytheFoundingFathersshouldaccordthepopulaceasmuchfreedomasreasonable;thatgovernmentshouldlimititsauthorityaccordingly,knownaslimitedgovernment.
