tesuch“greatquetsions”,theauthorsgiveusthesefourlameexamples:WhatcanIdotoincreasesales?WhatcanIdotodoublesales?WhatcanIdotodoublesalesinsixmonths?WhatcanIdotoincreasemysalesby5percentthisyear?WHAT?Isthatallthat’sontheauthor’smind?Sodull…Mycriticismsaren’tallsubjective,either.Ialsofoundthisbookinternally-contradictoryinplaces.There’sawholechapteron“don’tbeself-disciplined”(whichiscontroversialpurelyforitsownsake).Justtenpageslater,theauthorsaysweshouldallbeself-disciplinedagain,andspendsthreepagesdescribinganexperimentthatsuggestedtoddlerswithmorewillpowerwouldgrowuptobehappier,smarter,richer,healthieradults.Soshouldwebeself-disciplinedornot?Confusing.Here’sanothercontradiction:onpage73,hewrites,underlined,“Abalancedlifeisamyth”.Wethenwadethroughninepagesofjargonandidiosyncraticdiagramsbeforefindingtheauthor’sproposedalternativeonpage82:“Counterbalanceyourpersonallifebucket”(sic).Thisisanothercontradictionatworst,orjustjargon-jugglingatbest.He’scertainlynotgivingusefuladvice.IlaughedwhenIreachedpage114.Here,the“OneThing”theorycollapseswhentheauthorsexplainthatlifeisfullof“OneThings”andthenasksustodoalloftheminbalance.(Itthereforelookslikethe“OneThing”theoryhasbeendisproven!)Inconclusion,TheOneThingisanidiosyncratic,pointlesslyantagonisticandself-contradictorybookwrittenforpeoplewithnotime(orforsearchengines!).Ithastinychapters,ishighlyvisual,andmakesheavyuseofcapitals,italicsandunderlining.Actually,thisbookissorepetitiveandconfusingthatIwouldn’tbesurprisedtolearnthatit’sbeenwrittenforsearchenginesratherthanpeople.Thismightjustbetheworld’sfirst“search-engineoptimised”book!Suchpoor-qualityconveyanceofsuchpoor-qualityideasonlydeservestobecondensedintoaone-pagearticleandpostedontoLinkedInsowecanallskimpastit.Itshouldneverhavebeenmadeintoabook.Asametaphor,thisbookislikeanon-dryhandwash.Iwalkpastit,IpressitandIuseitjustbecauseit’sthere.Itfeelscoldandflavourlessanddripsoffmyskinratherthansinkingin.Eventhoughithasashort-livedpositiveimpact,Iwillneverfeelanylongtermbenefitsfromhavingpickeditup.Readingthisbookislikeeatingplaintofustraightfromthefridge.It’snotunhealthy,it’sjustvery,verybland—andaroundhalf-waythrough,you’llrealiseit’ssopointlessandtastelessthatyou’llbemockingyourselfforeverhavingreadit.AimedatFightClub’sprotagonist.Notrecommendedforanyone.
