Thedivisionofthelineagewasundertakentosecurethehereditarysuccession.Sinceintheprecedinggenerationstherehadonlyeverbeenonesurvivingmalesuccessor,therewasalwaysaconstantriskthatthedynastywoulddieoutandtheempirethathadbeenaccumulatedwithsucheffortwouldcollapse.Effortstocementthesuccessiononbothsidesledtomarriagesbetweenthetwolinesineachgeneration.Fromagenealogicalperspectivethetwobranchesofthedynastyconstitutedasinglefamily entity.
