ForashorttimeAustriatoobelongedtoCharles’sglobalempire.OnthedeathofhisgrandfatherMaximilianIin1519CharleshadinheritedtheAustrianpatrimoniallands.However,in1521/22hetransferredhisdominionovertheseCentralEuropeandynasticterritoriestohisyoungerbrotherFerdinand,thefounderoftheAustrianlineofthe Habsburgs. Thedivisionofthelineagewasundertakentosecurethehereditarysuccession.Sinceintheprecedinggenerationstherehadonlyeverbeenonesurvivingmalesuccessor,therewasalwaysaconstantriskthatthedynastywoulddieoutandtheempirethathadbeenaccumulatedwithsucheffortwouldcollapse.Effortstocementthesuccessiononbothsidesledtomarriagesbetweenthetwolinesineachgeneration.Fromagenealogicalperspectivethetwobranchesofthedynastyconstitutedasinglefamily entity. WithinthedynastyCharlesheldthepositionofheadofthefamily,andhissiblingswereboundtoobeyhim.HisbrotherFerdinandwasforalongtimeovershadowedbyCharlesandwasslowtodevelopanindependentprofileofhisownasaruler.Lateronhesometimesfoundhimselfopposinghispowerful brother.
