Thecompanyhasitsrootsinthe MassRapidTransitCorporation(MRTC),an organisationsetupinOctober1983tooverseetheconstructionandoperationoftherailnetwork.InAugust1987,SingaporeMassRapidTransitLimted(SMRT)wassetupasaprivatecompanytaskedwithoperatingtherailnetwork,aheadoftheopeningoftheNorthSouthLinethreemonthslater. Whilehavingitsoriginsasatrainoperator,thecompanylaterdiversifiedintobusesandtaxioperations,mostsignificantlyhavingacquiredTrans-IslandBusServices(TIBS) asasubsidiaryin2001,andwithitaportionofthe publicbusindustry.Italsooffersrailandautomotivemaintenanceandengineeringservices. SMRTnowoperatesthe NorthSouthLine, EastWestLine, CircleLine andthe Thomson-EastCoastLine (fromYear2019). ItoperatestheBukitPanjangLRTthroughitssubsidiary, SMRTLightRail.
