In1858–1859,salesreached$1 million.Bythatpoint,about80employeesworkedforProcter&Gamble.DuringtheAmericanCivilWar,thecompanywoncontractstosupplytheUnionArmywithsoapandcandles.Inadditiontotheincreasedprofitsexperiencedduringthewar,themilitarycontractsintroducedsoldiersfromalloverthecountrytoProcter&Gamble'sproducts.
