UnlikeMid-WaveInfrared(MWIR)andLong-WaveInfrared(LWIR)light,whichisemittedfromtheobjectitself,SWIRissimilartovisiblelightinthatphotonsarereflectedorabsorbedbyanobject,providingthestrongcontrastneededforhighresolutionimaging.Ambientstarlightandbackgroundradiance(nightglow)arenaturalemittersofSWIRandprovideexcellentilluminationforoutdoor,nighttimeimaging. Itisessentialtousealensthatisdesigned,optimized,andcoatedfortheSWIRwavelengthrange.Usingalensdesignedforthevisiblespectrumwillresultinlowerresolutionimagesandhigheropticalaberrations.SinceSWIRwavelengthstransmitthroughglass,lenses,andotheropticalcomponents(opticalfilters,windows,etc.)designedforSWIRcanbemanufacturedusingthesametechniquesusedforvisiblecomponents,decreasingmanufacturingcostandenablingtheuseofprotectivewindowsandfilterswithinasystem. AlargenumberofapplicationsthataredifficultorimpossibletoperformusingvisiblelightarepossibleusingSWIR.WhenimaginginSWIR,watervapor,fog,andcertainmaterialssuchassiliconaretransparent.Additionally,colorsthatappearalmostidenticalinthevisiblemaybeeasilydifferentiatedusingSWIR.
