Whatcausesstammering?Itisnotpossibletosayforsurewhy achildstartsstammering,butitisnotcausedbyanythingtheparentshavedone.Developmentalandinheritedfactorsmayplayapart,alongwithsmalldifferencesinhowefficientlythespeechareasofthebrainareworking.SpeechdevelopmentSpeechdevelopmentisacomplexprocessthatinvolvescommunicationbetweendifferentareasofthebrain,andbetweenthebrainandthemusclesresponsibleforbreathingandspeaking.Wheneverypartofthissystemworkswell,therightwordsarespokenintherightorder,withcorrectrhythm,pausesandemphasis.Achildlearningtoconstructsimplesentencesneedspracticetodevelopthedifferentspeechareasinthebrainandcreatethe"wiring"(neuralpathways)neededforthedifferentpartstoworkwelltogether.Talkingproblemscanhappenifsomepartsofthisdevelopingsystemarenotco-ordinated.Thiscancauserepetitionsandstoppages,particularlywhenthechildhaslotstosay,isexcited, orfeelsunderpressure.Asthebraincontinuestodevelop,someoftheseproblemsresolveorthebraincancompensate,whichiswhymanychildren "growout"ofstammering.SexdifferencesandgenesStammeringismorecommoninboysthangirls.Itisunclearwhythisis.Genesarealsothoughttohavearole.Around2in3peoplewhostammerhaveafamilyhistoryofstammering,whichsuggeststhegenesachildinheritsfromtheirparentsmightmakethemmorelikelytodevelopastammer.
