Fusion Thelatentheatoffusionistheheatrequiredforanobjecttogofromthesolidstatetotheliquidstate,orviceversa.[1]Sinceitsvalueisgenerallymuchhigherthanspecificheat,itallowsyoutokeepabeveragecoldformuchlongerbyaddingicethansimplyhavingacoldliquidtobeginwith.It'salsowhyfrozenmeattakesalongtimetothaw,butonceitsthawed,itheatsupquickly.Thelatentheatoffusionisalsoreferredtoastheenthalpyoffusion. Iceandwaterhaveenormouslatentheatsassociatedwiththemwhichiswhysnowtakessolongtomeltandboilingwaterisusedforcooking.Thisisalsoimportantinkeepingourplanetcomfortabletoliveon,andprovidesafairamountofresistancetoclimatechange. Vaporization Thelatentheatofvaporizationisthethermalenergyrequiredforaliquidtovaporizetoagasortheamountthatisreleasedwhenagascondensestoaliquid.[1]Thelatentheatofvaporizationisalsoreferredtoastheenthalpyofvaporization.Waterhasahighlatentheatofvaporization,whichiswhysteamburnsaresodangerous.Whensteamburnsaperson'sarmforexample,thisenergytransfercausesthesteamtocondense—whichusesmuchmoreenergythansimplychangingthetemperature.Hotwaterwouldalsoburn,however,ifapersonweretogetahotwaterburn—thatwouldonlychangethetemperatureoftheperson'shandandthewater,andwillnotcauseaphasechange.Therefore,steamwaterburnsaremuchworse(becauseaphasechangeisactuallyhappening).
