Singapore'sgrowingpopulationandboomingeconomyhavecontributedtoaabout7-foldincreaseintheamountofsolidwastedisposedfrom1,260tonnesadayin1970toapeakof8,741tonnesadayin2021.SolidwastemanagementinSingaporebeginsathomesandbusinesses.Wastethatisnotsegregatedatsourceisthencollectedandsenttothewaste-to-energyplantsforincineration.Incinerationreducesthevolumeofsolidwastebyabout90%andenergyisrecoveredtogenerateelectricity.TheashresiduesfromtheincinerationprocessaresenttotheTuasMarineTransferStation(TMTS)and,togetherwithnon-incinerablewaste,arebargedovertoSemakauLandfillfordisposal.Waste-To-EnergyPlantsCurrently,Singapore'ssolidwastedisposalinfrastructureconsistsoffourwaste-to-energy(WTE)plants,viz:TuasOneWaste-To-EnergyPlant(TWTE),KeppelSeghersTuasWaste-To-EnergyPlant(KSTP),TuasSouthIncinerationPlant(TSIP)andSenokoWaste-To-EnergyPlant(SWTE)aswellastheSemakauLandfill.KSTPwasdevelopedunderaDesign,Build,OwnandOperate(DBOO)modelandcommissionedin2009toreplaceSingapore'sfirstWTEplantatUluPandan,whichwasclosedinAugust2009after30yearsofoperation.TheSenokoIncinerationPlantwasalsodivestedtotheprivatesectorinSeptember2009andhassincebeenrenamedSenokoWaste-to-EnergyPlant(SWTE).TWTEwasalsodevelopedunderaDesign,Build,OwnandOperate(DBOO)modelandcommissionedin2021toreplaceSingapore'ssecondWTEplant(i.e.TuasIncinerationPlant),whichwasclosedinFebruary2022after36yearsofoperation.Theincinerationofsolidwastereducesitsvolumebyabout90%.Thishashelpedland-scarceSingaporeextendthelifespanofSemakauLandfill.Foracomprehensiveviewoftheincinerationprocess,pleaseclickhere.TuasMarineTransferStationAshfromthewaste-to-energyplantsandnon-incinerablesolidwastearebroughttotheTuasMarineTransferStation(TMTS),auniquefacilitythatallowssolidwastetobeunloadeddirectlyfromvehiclesintolongbarges.Speciallydesignedtugboatsthenpushthecoveredbargesona3-hourlongjourneytoSemakauLandfilllocated30kmawayfromTMTS.ForamorecomprehensiveviewofthewastemanagementprocessatTMTS,pleaseclickhere.SemakauLandfillSemakauLandfillopenedon1April1999andiscurrentlySingapore’sonlylandfill.Coveringanareaof350hectares,itisexpectedtomeetthecountry’ssolidwastedisposalneedsupto2035andbeyond.In2021,thelandfillreceivedanaverageof2,098tonnesofincinerationashandnon-incinerablewasteeachday.Measurestakenduringthelandfill’sconstructiontoprotectthemarineenvironmentensuredthatthecoralreefsalongPulauSemakau’swesternshoreremainlargelyintact.Thetwoplotsofreplantedmangrovesarealsothriving.ForamorecomprehensiveviewofthesolidwastedisposalprocessatSemakauLandfill,pleaseclickhere.DevelopmentofIntegratedWasteManagementFacility(IWMF)NEAislookingintothedevelopmentofanIntegratedWasteManagementFacility(IWMF)tohelpSingaporemeetitsfuturewastemanagementneedsandachievelongtermenvironmentalsustainability.Asastate-of-the-artflagshipfacility,itwillbedevelopedwithinnovativesolutionsthatcanmaximisebothenergyandresourcerecoveryfromsolidwaste.AstheIWMFandtheTuasWaterReclamationPlant(TWRP)willbeco-locatedatthesameTuasViewBasinsite,varioussynergieswillbederivedtobenefitbothNEAandPUB.Click here formoredetailsonthedevelopmentoftheIWMF.
