Earlysignsaftertickbiteincludecold–likesymptomssuchasheadache,fever,swollenlymphnodes,sorethroat,andneckstiffness.MostcasesofLymediseasecanbetreatedsuccessfullywithafewweeksofantibiotics.Thecomplicationsinvolvingtheheartandnervoussystemcanoccurwithoutappropriatetreatment. (3)Changeclothesandtakingashowerimmediatelyafteravisittothebushareatoreducetheriskofinfection. Ifatickisfoundattachedtotheskin,pleasepromptlyremovethetickusingfine–tippedtweezerswithcautiontopreventcausingthemouth–partstobreakoffandremainingintheskin,andcleanthebitesiteusingsoapandwatertolowertheriskofinfection. TheLymediseasebacterium,B.burgdorferi,isspreadthroughthebiteofinfectedticks.Mosthumansareinfectedthroughthebitesofimmaturetickscallednymphs.Nymphsaretiny(lessthan2mm)anddifficulttosee.Tickscanattachtoanypartofthehumanbodybutareoftenfoundinhard–to–seeareassuchasthegroin,armpits,andscalp. WhataretheclinicalsymptomsofLymedisease? Earlysignsaftertickbiteincludecold–likesymptomssuchasheadache,fever,swollenlymphnodes,sorethroat,andneckstiffness,andacharacteristicskinrashcallederythemamigrans.Ifleftuntreated,infectioncanspreadtojoints,theheart,andthenervoussystem.Seekmedicalattentionifyouobserveanyofthesesymptomsandhavehadatickbite. Howtoremoveatick? (1)Usefine–tippedtweezerstograspthetickasclosetotheskin'ssurfaceaspossible. (2) Pullupwardwithsteady,evenpressure.Don'ttwistorjerkthetick;thiscancausethemouth–partstobreakoffandremainintheskin.Ifthishappens,removethemouth–partswithtweezers.Ifyouareunabletoremovethemoutheasilywithcleantweezers,leaveitaloneandlettheskinheal. (3) Afterremovingthetick,thoroughlycleanthebiteareaandyourhandswithrubbingalcohol,aniodinescrub,orsoapandwater. (4) Disposeofalivetickbysubmersingitinalcohol,placingitinasealedbag/container,wrappingittightlyintape,orflushingitdownthetoilet.Nevercrushatickwithyourfingers.
