Skiptocontent Products Researchfish Services Successstories Conference StrategyofImpact2019 StrategyofImpact2018 StrategyofImpact2017 ImpactTraining ImpactTrainingCourse About Thecompany Themembers Careers Resources Contact Myaccount BorisJohnsonsaidinNovember2019hewantedto“ensurebrilliantscientistsareabletospendasmuchtimeaspossiblecreatingnewideas,notfillinginunnecessaryforms.”FastforwardtoSeptember2020,asweare6monthsintotheglobalcovid-19pandemicandthisaspirationisprobablymoretruetodaythaneverbefore.Focusingoureffortsandresourcesontothingsthatmatteriskeytosavinglivesandgettingbacktowhatweonceunderstoodasnormality.Thisincludesallowingresearcherstospendasmuchtimedoingresearchaspossible,whilestillenablingfundingagenciesandresearchorganisationstounderstandtheworkbeingcarriedout,wheretobesttargetfundsandensuringthatcollaborationandcommunicationcancontinueunimpededglobally.  Overthepastcoupleofdecades,withtheexplosionoftheinternetamultitudeofdifferentplatformshavesprunguptosupportinitiativesfromfundingallocationthroughtoimpacttrackingandassessment.AtInterfolioUKweprovidetheresearchfishplatformthatenablesfundersandresearchorganisationstocapturetheoutputs,outcomesandimpactsoftheirresearch,thatinturnhelpsthemmakestrategicfundingandresearchdecisions.Toputitinabusinesscontext,youcanthinkofthispartoftheprocessasthereturnoninvestmentcomponent,whichhelpskeepsthefundsflowingandensuresthatareasofresearchthatmightotherwisefallbehind,receivetherequisitefundingtheyneed.Itisavitalpartofthefundinglandscapebutlikevirtuallyallreportingsystemsitformspartofwhatiswidelyknownas“burdenonresearchers”.  Ithinkit’sfairtosaythatmostresearchersdon’tmindtheideaofreportingtheirwork,butwheretheyrightlygetstroppyiswhentheyareaskedtorepeatedlyreportthesameinformationtodifferentstakeholders.AtInterfolioUKwehaveaguidingprinciplewhichunderpinseverythingwedo,whichistoreducetheburdenonresearchersbyadoptinga“writeonce,readmany”philosophy.Wetaketheviewthatifdatahasbeencreatedonceinanysystem,thenwewilltrytoreusethatinformationinresearchfish.Wetaketheissueofsysteminteroperabilityveryseriouslyandthreeyearsagoestablishedaworkinggroupmadeupoffundingagenciesandresearchorganisationsalike,tomapoutaprogramofworktoconnectdatafromuniversityCurrentResearchInformationsystems(CRIS)toresearchfish.  Theresultofthisintegrationworkhasbeenprofound.Onaverageittakesaresearcher70secondstoreportapublicationinresearchfish.Since2015,17researchorganisationshavetakenadvantageoffunctionalitytopushdatafromtheirCRIS/repositorysystems,andhaveuploadedalmost40,000publications,savingover770hoursofresearchertime.Wecontinuetoreduceburdenviaourautomatedharvestingengines,whichpolltheknownpublicationanddatarepositoriescopyingindatatoresearchfishwherewecanfirmlyestablishalinktotheoriginalfunding.Thishasbeenapositivejourneyandhasrequiredcooperationfromtheresearchcommunitytoensuregrantfundingacknowledgementsareaddedwheneverinformationisenteredintoothersystems.Wehavebeenabletoharvestaround108,000publications,savingafurther2,120hoursofresearchertime.WorkcontinuesinthisareaofinteroperabilitywithadeepeningofourintegrationtoDatacitecomingattheendof2020,intimeforthe2021annualresearchfishdatagatheringperiodwhenthemajorityofstakeholdersasktheirresearcherstocheckandsubmittheirinformationinresearchfish. AnotherareaoffocusforusisintegrationwithORCID.CurrentlyresearcherscanlinktheirORCIDaccounttoresearchfishanduseasinglesignonapproachwhichnotonlyallowsthemtologintoresearchfishusingORCID,butalsosynchronisestheirORCIDdatawithresearchfish,inabidirectionalway.UsingORCIDisanexcellentwaytomaintainlogoncredentials,asmanyacademicsswitchinstitutionsandthereforelosetheiruniversityemailaddress,whichiswhattheytypicallymightuseotherwise.Inanotherblogpost,scheduledtobepublishedlaterthisyearwewilltakeadeeperlookattheworkwearedoingtocontinueinteroperability. Atthetimeofwritingthisblogresearchfishharvestsdatafromandlinksintoapproximately19,000sourcesaroundtheworld,whichallowsustoprovidelooksupsforlotsofthestandardoutcomescollectedinthesystemsuchasfurtherfunding,companydataforspinouts,patentdataforintellectualproperty,publicationsanddatasets–againsavingvaluabletimefortheresearchers.Overallthereisstillmuchtobedone,butbasedonchangestotheuserexperience,harvestingandinteroperabilitywork,wehavereducedthetimetakenbymostresearcherstoaround45minutesperawardperyearandthereismoretosayonthistopicinafutureblog,sowatchthisspace.Wecontinuetobuildconnectionswithsourcesofresearchoutputdataacrosstheglobe,aspartofourcommitmenttoreusingdatawhereverpossible,encouragingandsupportingfunderswhowishtoshareinformationbetweenthem.  AtInterfoliowefullysupportthebustingbureaucracymovementbycontinuingtofocusontheinitiativesmentionedabove.WeknowthatmajorUKfundingorganisationssuchasUKResearchandInnovationandtheNationalInstituteforHealthResearchareworkinghardtoreducetheadministrativeprocessesaroundallaspectsoffundedresearch,inordertomaximiseresearchhours.Itistruethatreportingisbyitsverynature,anadministrativetaskbutwithstreamlinedprocessesfocussingonwhatisimportantandwhatdeliversrealinsightswecanfindtherightbalancetoresultinawin-winforfundersandresearchersalike.  Postnavigation  PreviousNext  Morethan160,000awardstrackedviaResearchfish Areyoureadytotrackyours?
