In2015ObamasignedintolawtheEveryStudentSucceedsAct(ESSA),whichrescindedseveralofthemost-unpopularprovisionsofNCLB.Underthenewlaw,forexample,stateswerestillrequiredtoadministerstandardizedfederaltestsbuthadgreaterlatitudeindetermininghowandwhensuchtestswouldbegiven.Stateswerealsopermittedtoincludeothermeasuresofstudentandschoolperformanceintheiraccountabilitysystemswithinbroadfederalguidelines.ESSAencouraged,butdidnotrequire,statestodeveloptheirownteacher-evaluationsystemsandeliminatedNCLB’srequirementthatteachersincoresubjectsbe“highlyqualified.”Italsopermittedschooldistrictstodesigntheirownremediesforimprovingpoorlyperformingschoolswithtechnicalassistancefromthestates.
