Insistenceonsameness,inflexibleadherencetoroutines,orritualizedpatternsorverbalnonverbalbehavior(e.g.,extremedistressatsmallchanges,difficultieswithtransitions,rigidthinkingpatterns,greetingrituals,needtotakesamerouteoreatfoodeveryday). Highlyrestricted,fixatedintereststhatareabnormalinintensityorfocus(e.g,strongattachmenttoorpreoccupationwithunusualobjects,excessivelycircumscribedorperseverativeinterest). Impairmentoftheabilitytochangecommunicationtomatchcontextortheneedsofthelistener,suchasspeakingdifferentlyinaclassroomthanontheplayground,talkingdifferentlytoachildthantoanadult,andavoidinguseofoverlyformallanguage. Difficultiesfollowingrulesforconversationandstorytelling,suchastakingturnsinconversation,rephrasingwhenmisunderstood,andknowinghowtouseverbalandnonverbalsignalstoregulateinteraction. Difficultiesunderstandingwhatisnotexplicitlystated(e.g.,makinginferences)andnonliteralorambiguousmeaningsoflanguage(e.g.,idioms,humor,metaphors,multiplemeaningsthatdependonthecontextforinterpretation). B.Thedeficitsresultinfunctionallimitationsineffectivecommunication,socialparticipation,socialrelationships,academicachievement,oroccupationalperformance,individuallyorincombination.
