EarlyYears VirginiawasbornonJune26,1916,inNeillsville,Wisconsin.ShewastheeldestchildwhoseparentswereOscarandMinniePagenkopf.Asayounggirl,shewasaverybrightchildwithagreatsenseofcuriosity.Atonlythreeyearsold,shetaughtherselfhowtoread.Shealsowantedtobeadetectivewhenshewasyoung.Thisinterestinuncoveringthetruthlaterbecameherlifelongpassionthroughhertherapeuticpractice. Whenshewasfiveyearsold,Virginiasufferedfromappendicitis.Atfirst,hermotherdidnotwanttotakehertothedoctor,butherfatherdecidedtooverrulethisdecision.Virginiawasluckysincedoctorswereabletosaveherlife,butshewasforcedtostayinthehospitalforafewmonths.BythetimeVirginiawasnine,shecouldreadallthebooksinthelibrary. In1929,thefamilymovedtoMilwaukeesothatVirginiacouldenrollinhighschool.HerhighschoolyearscoincidedwiththeGreatDepressionandinordertohelpherfamily,shetookapart-timejob.In1932,shereceivedherhighschooldiploma.Afterthis,shejoinedtheMilwaukeeStateTeachersCollege.Duringthistime,sheworkedasababysittertosupplementherincome. CareerasTherapist Afterhergraduation,VirginiaSatirstartedworkinginprivatepractice.Bytheendofthedecade,shemovedtoCaliforniawheresheco-foundedMRI(MentalResearchInstitute)inPaloAlto.In1962,theinstitutereceivedagrantfromtheNationalInstituteofMentalHealth.Thisallowedthemtostartthefirstformalfamilytherapytrainingprogram.Shewashiredastheinstitute’strainingdirector. OneofVirginia’smostnovelideasduringthistimewasthatsurfaceproblemwashardlyevertheactualproblem.Sheofferedinsightsintocertainproblemsthatlowself-esteemcouldcauseinarelationship.Virginia’svisionwastoseepeoplerealizetheirself-worthandgetbackintouchwiththeirfeelingsandfreethemselvesfromtheirblockedemotions. Virginiawasalsointerestedinnetworking.Shefoundedtwogroupstohelpindividualsfindmentalhealthworkersorpeoplewhoweresufferingfromsimilarissuestotheirown.In1977,shefoundedtheAvantaNetwork,whichwaslaterrenamedtheVirginiaSatirGlobalNetworkin2010. ContributionstoPsychology Virginiacontinuallyplantedseedsofhopetowardworldpeace.In1988,shesaidthatthefamilyisamicrocosmandbyknowinghowtohealthefamily,theworldcouldalsobehealed.Withthismind,sheestablishedprofessionaltraininggroupsinWesternEurope,EasternEurope,theMiddleEast,theOrient,CentralAmerica,LatinAmericaandRussia. Inthemid-1970s,Satir’sworkwasextensivelystudiedbyRichardBandlerandJohnGrinder,thefoundersofNeuro-linguisticprogramming.RichardandJohncollaboratedwithVirginiatoauthorabookcalledChangingwithFamilies. VirginiaSatiralsoinfluencedLoriGordon’sdevelopmentofthePAIRSrelationshipeducationprogram.SheservedasthehonoraryfoundingchairpersonofPAIRSFoundation.Virginiaalsoencouragedmarriageandfamilytherapiststoshifttheirfocustorelationshipeducation. In1964,VirginiaSatirpublishedherfirstbookcalledConjointFamilyTherapy.ThiswasdevelopedfromthetrainingmanualshewrotetoherstudentsatMRI.Witheachbookshewrote,hereputationroseandshetravelledtheworldtospeakonherideas.Inmostcases,sheintegratedmeditationsandpoeticwritingintoherpublicworkshopsandwritings. AwardsandRecognition In1979,VirginiawasappointedtobeontheSteeringCommitteeoftheInternationalFamilyTherapyAssociation.Shehasalsobeenrecognizedwithseveralhonorarydoctorates.In1982,shewasselectedbyWestGermanGovernmentasoneofthe12mostinfluentialleadersintheworld. Intwodifferentsurveysamongpsychiatrists,socialworkers,marriage,psychologistsandfamilytherapists,shewasvotedmostinfluentialofthemall.
