Then,the"RoyalHongKongGolfClub"wasstartedin1889by"thirteengolfingenthusiasts"inasharedlocationinHappyValley.Accordingto"HistoryoftheRoyalHongkongGolfClub",whichwaswrittenbyT.F.R.Waters,ofthesethirteen,withtheexceptionofRobertMurrayRumseyR.N.(thenHongKongHarbourMasterandtheRumseyStreetwasnamedafterhisname.)andGershomStewart(afterwardsKnightedandamemberofparliamentforHoylake)veryfewhadmuchnotionofthegamebutreadilyagreedtodowhattheycouldtoestablishedafootholdforitintheColony.AlthoughCaptainRumseyandStewarthadclubsandballsandhadinfactbeendrivingtheseballswithintheracetrackatHappyValleybefore1889,theopinionoftheMeetingwasthatattemptsshouldbemadetoacquirelandtheninpossessionofthemilitaryinKowloon.RumseyhadbeenelectedcaptainofthenewclubandhadsecuredtheconsentoftheGovernor–SirWilliamDesVoeux–toacceptthepresidency.DespitethisinfluenceatCourtthemilitaryauthoritiescouldnotbepersuadedtobecomecooperative,andaftersomemonthsthepropositionhadtobedropped.However,on30September1889permissionwaseventuallyobtainedfromHongKongGovernmenttousegroundatHappyValley.Moneywasraisedandworkwasstartedmakingthegreensandtees.ThearchitectofthecourseatHappyValleywasCaptain(afterwardsColonel)H.N.DumbletonR.E.Theworkprogressedrapidly,anditisrecordedthatinMay1890amatchofsixasidewasplayedbetweentheClubandthe91stRegimentoftheArgyleandSutherlandHighlanders,whichtheClubwoneasily.[7] In1896,CaptainRumseyandCaptainDumbletonexaminedthepossibilitiesofDeepWaterBayasapossiblesolutiontotheever-increasingpressurefromtheladiesforextensionoftheirveryrestrictedprivilegesatHappyValleyasimposedbyCommodoreBoyes.NegotiationswereopenedwithGovernmentinJune1897andwiththenotinconsiderableassistanceoftheGovernorhimself,SirWilliamRobinson,"thebestfriendtheClubeverhad",aleaseoflandforasmallnine-holecourseatDeepWaterBaywasconcludedwithHongKonggovernmentin1898.[8] DeepWaterBaygolfcourse On1September1897asaresultofaletteraddressedtoQueenVictoria'sLordChamberlainthefollowingreplywasaddressedtoSirWilliamRobinsonG.C.M.G.GovernorofHongKong:"Sir,Withreferencetoyourdispatchof20thJulyaddressedtotheRightHonorableTheLordChamberlain,TheEarlofLothian,IhavethehonourtoinformyouthatonyourapplicationbeinglaidbeforeTheQueen,HerMajestywasgraciouslypleased,inviewofyourrecommendations,togiveHerpermissiontotheHongKongGolfClubbeingcalled'TheRoyalHongKongGolfClub'."ThisannouncementwasreceivedwithgreatacclaimanddulycelebratedbyabanquetatwhichSirWilliamwasanhonouredguest.[9] In1903,theClubobtainedexclusiveuseofHappyValleygroundexceptforWednesdaysandSaturdays,whensoccerandcricketwereplayed.Fromthestart,usebyladieswasheavilyrestricted.AndwhentheclubgainedexclusiveuseofHappyValleyin1903,ladieswereallowedtoplayonSundaysonly.[1] InconnectionwiththissharingofthegroundatHappyValleythereisonrecordthisremarkmadebytheCaptainattheAnnualGeneralMeetingof1903inconnectionwiththeplayingofthefinaloftheClubChampionshipatHappyValley"ThethanksofthePlayersareduetotheCricketerswhosokindlystoppedtheirgametolettheGolfersthroughoneachround." TheproximityoftheGolfCoursetothefootballgroundonoccasionsleadtomisdirectedshotslandinginthefootballarenabutnooneseemstohavebeenhit.Therewashoweveroneoccasionwhenthelate"Auntie"Maitlandmisdirectedherdrivefromthe1stteeandcausedseriousinjurytotheeyeofaMarine.[10] 1911–1945[edit] AccordingtotheClubannals,"protractednegotiations"withthegovernmentandlocalfarmersresultedinsufficientlandbeingobtainedinFanling,itscurrentlocation,tobuilditsfirstfull18-holecoursethatwascompletedin1911.[1]ThefirstideawastousetheSunWeivalleybuttheArmyAuthoritiesopposedthis.Messrs.T.S.Forrest,K.M.Cumming,L.S.GreenhillandM.A.Murraywereappointedbytheclubtoviewthisgrazingland.Theirreportwasenthusiasticandfavourable.NegotiationswithGovernmentwereopened(1908)foraleaseofsufficientlandforafull-size18-holecoursetobeconstructed.ThesenegotiationswithGovernmentwereprotracteddespitetheClubreceivingagreatdealofassistancefromtheGovernor,SirHenryMay,indealingwiththelocalfarmersinthematterofacquiringcertainextrapiecesoflandconsideredessentialbythecoursearchitects.ItwassaidthatE.R.Hallifax,thethenTaiPoDistrictOfficer,wasthemanmorethananyotherresponsiblefortheconstructionofacourseatFanlinggolfcourse.TherelationshipoftheDistrictOfficerwiththevillageelderseverywherewasavuncularor,indeed,almostpaternal.[11]In1916,SirHenryMayarrangedfortheclubtoacquireadditionallandtoformaReliefCoursefortheuseoftheLadies. AtthetimetheOldCoursewaslaidout,therewerenotreesatallonthecourseexceptdownbythe3rdgreenandoneortwoneartheclubhousesite.Muchforestryworkwasundertakenduringtheperiod1915–1919buttherewasstillverylittletoshowyetexceptbeautifulclumpsofliliesandcannasonthehillsides.Gravemounds,or"pimples",astheywereknown,plusinnumerablejarsofhumanbones,existedonmanyofthefairways,butthesewereforthemostpartremovedin1920astheresultofagenerousgrantthroughSirHenryMayof$50,000,whichwaspaidoutascompensationtothefamiliesowningthem.Therewasaparticularlylargenumberofthe"jars"atthebaseofthe"saddle"or,asitisknowntoday,"TommyTucker"(derivedfromtheCantonese"Mmta-ka(唔得㗎)"–don'tstrike).Thesejarsunfortunatelywereindirectlinefromtheteeandgotbrokenonebyonebyduffedtee-shots.Thepenaltyforpickingoutwasonestrokebutthepickingwasusuallylefttothecaddie.[12] Treeswereconspicuousbytheirabsence,butthensowasthegrassonthefairwayswhichweremorerolledmudthananythingelse.Thismadethefairwaysverydustyespeciallyonawindyday.TheGreenswereturfedwithlocalgrass,muchofit'cabbage',whichmadeputtingdifficultwhilstagreatdealoftroublewasconstantlyexperiencedfromwormswhichfedupontheyoungfreshrootsanddidn'tgivetheGreenkeepersachance.Thecoursewasalmostdevoidallthattherewasagreatdealofroomforimprovingtheoriginallayout.TheCommitteeappointedMr.L.S.GreenhilltoworkoutwithMr.Kerr(whohadbeengeneralmanageroftheClubsince1914andresidedintheOrmeBungalow)onanewlayoutandnewbunkering.[13] In1919,acaddiesunionwasdiscoveredcalled"PoTaiNgoiYue"–GolfCaddiesClub–whichturnedouttobeasemi-triadsociety.ThefirstcaddiestriketookplaceinApril1922andwaseventuallysettled.[14] On2November1931,theNewCoursewhichhadbeendesignedbyL.S.Greenhillsomeyearsbefore,wasofficiallyopenedbySirWilliamPeel.[15] ItwassaidthatSirWilliamPeel,theGovernorofHongKonginearly1930s,wasakeengolfer.LittlewasallowedtointerferewithhisweeklyroundofgolforhisregularrideswiththeFanlingHunt.Herodehard,plungingacrosstheterracedricefields,boggingdownattimesinthewaterloggedmud.[16] In1933,GeorgeBernardShawvisitedtheclub.[17] In1936,Mr.StanleyH.Dodwellpresenteda"Captain'sChair"forthebarroomtocommemoratethedisappearanceofthelastofthePimplesontheOldCourse.WhenevertheCaptainisatFanlingandanyothermemberorsubscribersitsinthechairbymistake,thepenaltywillbeoneroundofdrinksatthatparticulartableinmemoryofthedepartedpimples.ItwasfortunatethatalthoughthischairwaslootedduringWWII,itwasspottedbeingusedasaSedanChairslungbetweentwopolesandrecoveredfortheclub.[18] 1945–1989[edit] Duringthe1950s,allthegreensremodelledandplantedwithGeziraorUgandagrass.ThisgrasshasallcomefromashoeboxfullofseededsoiltakenfromUgandatoCairoduringthewarandonemoresodofthisgrasswasflownfromCairotoHongKongin1951.[19] SirSidneyGordon,C.B.E.,J.P.,formerPresidentoftheclub,recalledhisstopoveratCairoairportin1951."Duringtheusualone-hourstopoverand,asrelationsbetweentheUnitedKingdomandEgyptwereratherstrained,thecustomsofficerwassomewhatsuspiciousofthisdamp,sackcloth-wrapped,parcelandinsistedonitbeingopened.Thecontentsmadehimevenmoresuspiciousbuttheinterventionoftheaircrewenabledustogetitonboardjustbeforetake-off."[20] Bytheendof1956,theindebtednessoftheclubhadbeenreducedto$40,000–areductionof$387,000ineightyears.[21] ThefirstHongKongOpentookplaceattheclubin1959.RidingSignatEdenCourseNegotiationswiththeJockeyClubstartedin1967and,induecourse,theStewardsoftheJockeyClubagreedtorecommendtotheirmembersthatapproximately30acresoflandatBeasRiver,betweentheJockeyClub'sWestPaddockandHangTauVillageRoad,shouldbeleasedtotheGolfClub.Inreturn,theGolfClubwouldprovidea'ride'ofaboutfourorfivemiles,whichwouldbelaidoutaroundtheperimeteroftheGolfClubpropertyandwouldbeavailableatalltimesformembersoftheJockeyClub.Duringtheautumnof1968,JohnHarris'sproposalsfortheextensionoftheEdenCoursewereconsidered.ThemembersapprovedexpenditureofHK1.3 milliononimprovementstotheEdenCourse.On10October1971,the6,142-yardpar-71EdenCoursewasofficiallyopenedbySirDavidTrench.[22] SirDavidTrench,GovernorofHongKongfrom1964to1971,waskeenongolf.Hehadinsistedonhisregulargameofgolfevenduringthepoliticalturmoilsinlate1960s.[23]InOctober1968,SirDavidTrenchwaspairingwithSingaporePrimeMinisterLeeKuanYewtoplayaroundofgolfagainstMrGordonMacwhinnie,theclub'sCaptainandMrW.C.ChoyatFanling. 1990–now[edit] In1996,inadvanceofthetransferofsovereigntyofHongKongfromtheUnitedKingdomtothePeople'sRepublicofChina,theclubdropped'Royal'fromitsname.[1] Inthesameyear,Mr.ChengYuen,whoactedasacaddieforgolfersattheDeepWaterBaycourseoftheclubfrom1986to1995,broughtaclaimagainsttheclubbeforetheLabourTribunal.Heclaimedthathewasanemployeeoftheclubandheaskedfor26days'wagesinlieuofnoticeandalongservicepaymentinviewofhislengthofservice.Theclub'sdefencewasthathewasnotanemployeebutanindependentcontractorsothathecouldnottakeadvantageoftheEmploymentOrdinance(Cap.57)whichinsection2defines"contractofemployment"as"anyagreement,whetherinwritingororal,expressorimplied,wherebyonepersonagreestoemployanotherandthatotheragreestoservehisemployerasanemployee...".TheTribunalfoundinhisfavourandawardedhimHK$33,840;Mrs.JusticeBokharyintheHighCourtupheldthatdecision.[24]TheCourtofAppealallowedtheclub'sappealandsetasidetheawardinfavourofMr.Cheng.[25]On20May1987hewasgivenspecialleavetoappealtothePrivyCouncil.DespiteLordHoffmann'sdissentingopinion,theCouncildismissedCheng'sappeal.[26] In2015,theClubcelebratedits125thanniversarybyofferingHongKongresidentsaspecialHK$125greenfeerateonselecteddays.[27] ThefirstHongKongLadiesOpentookplaceattheclubinJune2015. TiffanyChan,amemberofHongKongGolfClub,[28]wasqualifiedtoplay2016SummerOlympics.Shefinishedforafourovertotalof288(71-75-73-69)andranked37amongthe60players.[29] Membership[edit] In1897,theclub'smembershipreached250.[30] By1923,theclub'smembershipreached800.[15] InJuly1964,itwasdecidedtoclosethemembership.Allapplicants,regardlessofnationality,wereputonthewaitinglist.Thepolicywastoputtheemphasisongivingmembershiptoestablishedgolfersasopposedtobeginners.[31] Theclubcurrentlyhas2,510members,including365corporatenomineememberships.[32] St.George'svSt.Andrew's[edit] StGeorgeflagatOldCourse StAndrewsflagatOldCourse Priorto1921,therehadbeenseveralmatchesofScotlandversustheRestwithusuallyveryunsatisfactoryresultsforthemembersofScottishorigin.In1921,thefirstSt.George'sversusSt.Andrew'sMatchwasplayedinthemonthofJanuarywith,until1926,areturnmatchinDecember.After1926,theDecembergamewasdroppedprobablyduetothemanyothercompetitiontakingplaceinthatmonth.ThoseplayingfortheSocietiesmustbemembersoftheclubaswellasmembersofoneoftheSocieties.Entriesarenotlimitedexceptinsofarasitispossibletopairoff.ThelosingteaminthemorningSinglesmatchespaysforlunch.Therecordofthesematchesareasfollows:[33] Year Winner Year Winner Year Winner Year Winner 1921 St.Georges 1926 St.Georges 1936 St.Andrews 1951 St.Georges St.Georges 1927 St.Georges 1937 St.Andrews 1952 St.Andrews 1922 St.Georges 1928 St.Georges 1938 St.Andrews 1953 St.Andrews St.Andrews 1929 St.Georges 1939 St.Andrews 1954 St.Georges 1923 St.Georges 1930 St.Andrews 1940 St.Georges 1955 St.Georges St.Georges 1931 St.Andrews 1941 St.Georges 1956 St.Georges 1924 St.Georges 1932 St.Georges 1947 N/A 1957 N/A St.Georges 1933 St.Georges 1948 N/A 1958 N/A 1925 St.Georges 1934 St.Georges 1949 N/A 1959 N/A St.Andrews 1935 St.Georges 1950 St.Andrews 1960 N/A Debenturesandnomineemembership[edit] AfterWWII,theFanlingpropertyhadbadlysufferedfromgeneralneglectwhichwasunderstandableinthecircumstances.Thetreeshadbeencutdownforfuelandpartsofthecourseincludingmostofthegreenshadbeenusedforvegetablecultivation.TheNewCoursehadbeenusedfortrainingandalargenumberoffoxholeshadbeenbuilt.TheclubhousewasrequisitionedbytheBritishArmyafterthewar.Therehabilitationwasasexpensiveashadbeenforecast.TheClubnotonlyspentallitsaccountbalancesbuthadtoarrangeforanoverdraftwhichatonetimewasover$400,000.(ThepriceofdailynewspaperinHongKongwas20centsin1947–48.)ToreducethisliabilityadebentureissuewasauthorisedonthebasisofHK$500permember.AfewofthelongestablishedfirmssuchastheHongKongBankandJardinesalsotookupanumberofthedebenturestoaidtheclub.[34] In1963,anEGMwascalledandaFanlingDevelopmentSchemewasapproved.TworesolutionswerepassedauthorisingthecommitteetoproceedwithaschemefortheextensionoftheFanlingclubhouseandtheissueofdebenturestotheamountofHK$900,000tocoverthecosts.AbuildinglevyofHK$5permonthforallmemberswasalsointroduced.ActualandestimatedcapitalexpenditureontheimprovementtotheclubhousetotalledHK$1,214,000.[35] Inearly1970s,toraisecapitalforthenewcomplex,includingtheswimmingpoolandthemixedaccommodation,aschemeofNomineeMembershipswasintroduced.OnpaymentofHK$5,000–soonraisedtoHK$10,000–afirmbecameentitled,afterapprovalbytheclub,tonominateanemployeetomembership.TheNomineeMembershipsweretransferable,againsubjecttotheclub'sapproval,onpaymentofacommissiontotheclub.[36] AttheAGMin1980,itwasdecidedtoissue30NomineeMembershipstomeettheexpenseofaredevelopmentschemetoincludeaswimmingpoolandsquashcourtsinDeepWaterBay.ThenewbuildingatDeepWaterBaywascompletedinearly1983atacostofaboutHK$25 million.[37] Thefinancialproblemswereeventuallyovercome.Followingmanyyearsofloss,aprofitwasreportedin1984forthethirdyearrunning.Sincethen,theclubhasremainedintheblack.[38] In1986,10NomineeMembershipswereissuedinthepriceofHK$1.1 milliontoraisefundforthebuildingoftheautomaticirrigationsystem,whichpipingsecondarytreatedeffluentfromthesewagetreatmentplantbelongingtooneofthoseestatesofthenewtown,ShekWuHui.ThiswasthelasttimethattheClubissuedNomineeMembership.[39] Visitorsandgreenfees[edit] TheClubwelcomesnon-memberHongkongersonweekdaysatHK$1,200perroundandHK$500iftheyplayafter3 pm.Thenumberofroundsisunlimited[40]Theclubofferspracticesessionsonthenightrangein30-minuteintervalsfrom6 pmuntil11 pmsevendaysaweek(includingpublicholidays).Theseeitherstartonthehourorhalf-hourallowingplayersunlimiteduseofrangeballsduringthesetimeperiods.Thenightrangefeefor60minutesisHK$70onweekdaysandHK$100onweekendsandpublicholidays.[41] Facilities[edit] Besidesgolf,thecluboffersswimmingandtennisfacilities,aswellasrestaurantsandaccommodation. HappyValleyClubHouse[edit] In1896,theClubHousewasofficiallyopenedbyCommodoreBoyes.ThisClubHousehadbeendesignedbyMajorEdwardAlbertRam,entirelyonavoluntarybasis,asakeengolfer.Itwasbuiltofstonewiththemainentrancefacingtheracecourse;lockerslinedthewallsandatoneendtherewasastonetabletrecordingtheClubChampionssince1894.TherewasaDressingroom,barandacaretaker'sroom.Mrs.RumseyunfurledtheClubflagandasaspecialgestureaLadies'competitionwasplayedaftertheopeningdespitetheheavyrainwhichwasfalling.ThewomenwhoplayedinthishistoriceventwereMesdamesO'Gorman,Dalrymple,Eccles,BoyesandMissBoyesandMissGordon.ThewinnerwasMrs.O'Gorman.Afewmonthslater,portraitsofSirWilliamDesVoeuxandSirWilliamRobinsonwerepresentedtotheclubandhunginthemainentrance.[42] In1918,thedisastrousfirebrokeoutinmatshedsneartheClubHouseatHappyValley.Theflamesspreadsorapidlythatitprovedimpossibletosaveanyoftheclub'srecordsorstocks.Nothingbutashes.[43] FromthatdatetheclubhadbeenlentclubroomspaceonceagainbytheJockeyClubbutnoticethatthisparticularbuildingwastobepulleddownwasgiventotheGolfClubattheendof1928andtheseroomswereconsequentlyhandedbacktotheownersinFebruary1929.TheClubdecidedtobuildanewclubHouseatHappyValleyatacostofHK$30,000andthiswasdulycompletedinNovember1930andofficiallyopenedearlyin1931.[44] AftertheWorldWarII,theClubHousehadbeenthoroughlylootedbythemobsduringthehand-overintervalashadeveryunoccupiedresidenceintheHongKongandtheClubdecidedtosurrenderthispropertytoGovernmentformanyreasonsnottheleastofwhichwasfinancial.[34] DeepWaterBayClubHouse[edit] AttheAnnualGeneralMeetingin1898,itwasdecidedtoerectasinglestoryClubHouseatDeepWaterBayandthiswasbuiltin1899.MajorEdwardAlbertRam,whodesignedtheHappyValleyone,oncemorecametotheclub'saidashehadbythattimebecomeapartnerofMessrsDennison,RamandGibbs'architects.[45] DuringthewarandafterthefallofHongKongonChristmasDay1941,DeepWaterBaywasusedbytheJapaneseforvariouspurposesforthemostpartasatransportdepotbuttheyalsobuiltpiggeriesandtheseprovidedtheexcellentflagstoneswhichnowsurroundthesouthandeastsidesoftheClubHouse.TherehabilitationofDeepWaterBaywasnotundertakenuntil1947–48whenFrankGrovesandHectorMundydidanexcellentjob.[46] FanlingClubHouse[edit] Fanlingclubhouse LilyPondinsideHongKongGolfClub By1911,theoldcoursehadbeenlaidoutandoncemoreEdwardAlbertRamofMessrs.Dennison,Ram&Gibbsdesignedtheclubhouse,whichwasnothowevercompleteduntil1914andwasoriginallyknownastheDormieHouse.[47] HalfWayHouse[edit] TheHalfWayHouseatFanlingisaGradeIIIhistoricbuilding.[48]ItislocatedonFanlingGolfCourse.Inscriptionsonaboardovertheentranceindicatethatthebuildingwaserectedin1916bySirHenryMayandT.S.ForrestEsq.FrankHunter,ClubCaptainin1950,donatedmoneytoformthegardenattheHalf-wayHouseontheoccasionofhisretirementfromHongKong.ThepavilionisbuiltintraditionalChineseQingVernacularstyleconsistingofapartlyopen-sidedstructureformedofcolumnsspacedatregularinternalssupportingapitchedandhippedChinesetiledroof.Oneendofthepavilionhasbeenenclosedtoformakitchen.Theroofisdecoratedwithcurvingendridgestothehips,andacolourfulridge-boardsupportingtwogreendragonscompetingforthePearlforWisdom.Ornamentalfinialsintheshapeoffish,drippertilesandacolourfuleavesboardcompletethedecorationstotheroofwhichissupportedontraditionalChineserooftrusses.Theplinthisformedofunusualknappedstones.Therearethreeflightsofsteps.ThepavilionisararepieceofQingarchitecture.Itwasrestoredin1998andsomealternationshavebeenmade. In1980s,theClubintroducedtherecyclingofdomesticwastewatercollectedfromFanlingtowncentretouseasirrigation–makingthecoursesmoreplayableinwinter.[32] EnvironmentalStewardshipandHeritageTrees[edit] Accordingtotheclub'streesurvey,therearenearly100differentspeciesoftreeonthepropertyincludingthreespeciesthataredeemedbytheHongKongGovernmentasbeingOldandValuableones.SomeofthetreespeciesatFanlingincludebanyan,manyofwhichareover80yearsold,eucalyptus(therearesomeparticularlyspecialexamplesofthesebytherightsideofthe16thteeoftheOldCourse)aswellasindigenouscamphortrees,acacias,ironwoods,Norfolkpinesandpaperbarks.In2015,theclublaunchededucationalguidedtoursforlocalschoolsandorganizationsonspeciallydesignedtreetrailsoverthethreecoursesinFanling.[49]Besides,theclubalsoannouncedtojointheAudubonCooperativeSanctuaryProgrammeforGolf.[50] WildlifeandEcology[edit] TheFanlinggolfcourseisaround44%forested,therestconsistingofroadandfairway.Thevegetationcoverincludes75hectaresofmaturelowlandsecondaryforest,anextremelyrarehabitatinHongKong.Theforest'sageaswellasitspositiononlow-lyingterrainhasledtoahighlevelofbiodiversity.AsurveyfromtheAsiaEcologicalConsultantsin2018loggedover150birdspecies,over30reptilesandamphibiansand16speciesofmammals.Collaredscopsowl,Pallas'ssquirrel,bamboopitviperandcommonrosebutterfliesarecommonlyseendependingontheseasonandtimeofday.ThegolfcourseishometoseveralinternationallyendangeredspeciessuchasChinesepondturtle,Chineseswampcypress,andfreshwatercrabspeciesSomanniathelphusazanklonwhichisendemictoHongKongandisthreatenedbythedevelopmentofthecourse.[51]
