Narration Geneticimprintingisarathermysteriousphenomenonwhichhasbecomesomewhatbetterunderstoodinthelastfewyears.Essentially,whatitreferstoisthechemicalmodificationofaDNAsequence.KeepinmindherethattheDNAsequenceitselfisnotchanging.ThesearemodificationstotheDNAsequenceitselfthatoccurinacell--usuallyreferstoagermcell,eitheraneggcelloraspermcell--andthatchangeispassedonfromonegenerationtoanother.Thereasonitconfusedscientistsformanyyearsisthatitisanon-sequenced-basedmechanismofinheritance.Initially,itwasthoughtthatallinheritanceisbasedonchangesinsequence;thisturnsoutnottobetrue.Inoneofthosemechanisms,whichisnotinvolvedinchangeofsequence,butratheraninheritedchemicalchangetoaDNAsequence,isreferredtoasimprinting.Andthatimprinting,thereasonit'simportantisthatchemicalmodification,whichispassedonfromthemotherorthefathertotheoffspring,changesthefunctionofthegeneorthegeneproduct,whetherit'sexpressionoractuallythefunctionofthegeneproductitself.
