Advertising Iwanttonoteherethatyoucanalso“listen”tobodilycues.Youcanassumethatifsomeonekeepslookingattheirwatchorovertheirshoulder,theirfocusisn’tontheconversation.Thekeyistojustpayattention.2.UsePositiveBodyLanguageYoucaninferalotfromaperson’sbodylanguage.Aretheyinterested,bored,oranxious?Agoodlistener’sbodylanguageisopen.Theyleanforwardandexpresscuriosityinwhatisbeingsaid.Theirfacialexpressioniseithersmiling,showingconcern,conveyingempathy,etc.They’relettingthespeakerknowthatthey’rebeingheard.Peoplesaythingsforareason—theywantsometypeoffeedback.Forexample,youtellyourspouse,“Ihadareallyroughday!”andyourhusbandcontinuestocheckhisnewsfeedwhilenoddinghishead.Notagoodresponse.Butwhatifyourhusbandweretolookupwithquestioningeyes,puthisphonedown,andsay,“Oh,no.Whathappened?”Howwouldfeel,then?Theanswerisobvious.AccordingtoAlanGurney,[2]“Anactivelistenerpaysfullattentiontothespeakerandensurestheyunderstandtheinformationbeingdelivered.Youcan’tbedistractedbyanincomingcalloraFacebookstatusupdate.Youhavetobepresentandinthemoment. Bodylanguageisanimportanttooltoensureyoudothis.Thecorrectbodylanguagemakesyouabetteractivelistenerandthereforemore‘open’andreceptivetowhatthespeakerissaying.Atthesametime,itindicatesthatyouarelisteningtothem.”3.AvoidInterruptingtheSpeakerIamcertainyouwouldn’twanttobeinthemiddleofasentenceonlytoseetheotherpersonholdingupafingerortheirmouthopen,readytostepintoyourunfinishedverbiage.It’srudeandcausesanxiety.Youwould,morethanlikely,feelaneedtorushwhatyou’resayingjusttofinishyoursentence.Interruptingisasignofdisrespect.Itisessentiallysaying,“whatIhavetosayismuchmoreimportantthanwhatyou’resaying.”Whenyouinterruptthespeaker,theyfeelfrustrated,hurried,andunimportant.Interruptingaspeakertoagree,disagree,argue,etc.,causesthespeakertolosetrackofwhattheyaresaying.It’sextremelyfrustrating.Whateveryouhavetosaycanwaituntiltheotherpersonisdone.
