其最具有威脅性的要點就是能夠潛伏在人類的三叉神經元。

當細胞受到感染之後,病毒會從週邊神經系統沿著突觸到中央神經元潛伏,每當宿主免疫力下降時,病毒便會再次甦醒,引起諸多病徵,如唇皰疹、皰疹性角膜炎、鼻炎、腦髓炎、甚至是生殖器的黏膜部位等。

現今所使用的抗病毒藥物多針對病毒複製的步驟來加以抑制,長久下來,已衍生許多具備抗藥性的病毒株,往往為了達到更佳的治療效果加重給藥劑量,因藥物副作用而就診的病例也越來越多。

因此,找尋新的抗病毒方法以及開發新藥物已是迫在眉睫,此時,由天然界植物當中所找到抗病毒的有效成份可成為替代的方案。

在本實驗中,首先以不同精油用不同的抗病毒模式進行篩選,當中找到了左手香精油在病毒前處理的步驟對抗皰疹病毒的活性相當優異,而其主要成份香芹酚亦有不錯的抗病毒功效,為了要進一步探討此抗病毒活性是否與其結構相關,因此針對香芹酚各官能基做不同改變,找尋適合的化合物進行結構活性分析。

從結構活性的分析比對中可以發現,在香芹酚上的氫氧基對於抗病毒的效果佔有決定性的影響,除了氫氧基的有無外,氫氧基的位置也會影響抗病毒活性的差異。

由電子顯微鏡的直接觀察可以發現,經過香芹酚處理後的病毒結構明顯被破壞,顯示香芹酚能夠直接對病毒體本身產生抑制的效果,在往後亦可成為對抗皰疹系統中的一環,成為有效的抗病毒藥劑,預防病毒的入侵。
