Fromearlyyears,Satirdemonstratedaninterestinfamilydynamics.Whenshewasfive,shedecidedthatshewouldgrowuptobe"achildren'sdetectiveonparents,inclinationsthatwouldlaterbecometruethroughhertherapeuticpractices."[8]Shelaterexplainedthat"Ididn'tquiteknowwhatIwouldlookfor,butIrealizedalotwentoninfamiliesthatdidn'tmeettheeye."[8] In1929,hermotherinsistedthatthefamilymovefromtheirfarmtoMilwaukeesothatSatircouldattendhighschool.Satir'shighschoolyearscoincidedwiththeGreatDepression,andtohelpherfamilyshetookapart-timejobandalsoattendedasmanycoursesasshecouldsothatshecouldgraduateearly.In1932,shereceivedherhighschooldiplomaandpromptlyenrolledinMilwaukeeStateTeachersCollege(nowUniversityofWisconsin–Milwaukee.)Topayforhereducationsheworkedpart-timefortheWorksProjectsAdministrationandforGimbelsDepartmentStoreandfurthersupplementedherincomebybabysitting.[8]Shegraduatedwithabachelor'sdegreeineducation,andworkedasateacherforafewyears. Duringhertimeasaschoolteacher,sherecognizedthatinvolvedandsupportiveparentsnotonlyhelpstudentsintheclassroombutcouldalsohealfamilydynamics.Satirbeganmeetingandcooperatingwiththeparentsofherstudentsandsawthefamilysystemasareflectionofthe worldatlarge,stating“ifwecanhealthefamily,wecanhealtheworld” [8] Beginningin1937,forthreesummersshetookcoursesatNorthwesternUniversityinChicago.Herinterestinfamiliesledhertoenrollfull-timeattheUniversityofChicagoSchoolofSocialServicesAdministrationwheresheobtainedamaster'sdegreeinsocialwork.Shefinishedhercourseworkforhermaster'sdegreein1943,andcompletedherthesisforherdegreein1948.[8] Careerasatherapist[edit] Aftergraduatingsocialworkschool,Satirbeganworkinginprivatepractice.Shemetwithherfirstfamilyin1951,andby1955wasworkingwithIllinoisPsychiatricInstitute,encouragingothertherapiststofocusonfamiliesinsteadofindividualpatients.BytheendofthedecadeshehadmovedtoCalifornia,whereshecofoundedtheMentalResearchInstitute(MRI)inPaloAlto,California.MRIreceivedagrantfromNIMHin1962,allowingthemtobeginthefirstformalfamilytherapytrainingprogrameveroffered;SatirwashiredasitsTrainingDirector.[8] Innovation Satir'sskillsandviewsabouttheimportantrolethefamilyhasanditsconnectiontoanindividual'sproblemsand/orhealingprocess,ledherintobecomingarenownedtherapist. OneofSatir'smostnovelideasatthetime,wasthatthe"presentingissue"or"surfaceproblem"itselfwasseldomtherealproblem;rather,howpeoplecopedwiththeissuecreatedtheproblem."[9]Satiralsoofferedinsightsintotheparticularproblemsthatlowself-esteemcouldcauseinrelationships.[9]InadditiontoSatir’sinfluenceinhumansciences,shehelpedestablishorganizationswiththepurposeofeducatingtherapistsaroundtheworldandgrantingthemwithresourcestohelpfamiliesandclients. Longinterestedintheideaofnetworking,Satirfoundedtwogroupstohelpindividualsfindmentalhealthworkersorotherpeoplewhoweresufferingfromsimilarissuestotheirown.In1970,sheorganized"BeautifulPeople,"whichlaterbecameknownasthe"InternationalHumanLearningResourcesNetwork."In1977shefoundedtheAvantaNetwork,whichwasrenamedtotheVirginiaSatirGlobalNetworkin2010.[8][10] Recognition Twoyearslater,SatirwasappointedtotheSteeringCommitteeoftheInternationalFamilyTherapyAssociation[11]andbecameamemberoftheadvisoryboardfortheNationalCouncilforSelf-Esteem.[8] Shehasalsobeenrecognizedwithseveralhonorarydoctorates,includinga1978doctorateinSocialSciencesfromtheUniversityofWisconsin–Madison. ShewashonoredintheCaliforniaSocialWorkHallofDistinction. IntwonationalsurveysofPsychiatrists,Psychologists,SocialWorkers,andMarriageandFamilyTherapists,shewasvotedthemostinfluentialtherapist.[9] Workandinfluence[edit] Satir'sentireworkwasdoneundertheumbrellaof"BecomingMoreFullyHuman".[8]Fromthepossibilityofanurturingprimarytriadoffather,mother,andchildsheconceivedaprocessofHumanValidation.Sheviewedthereconciliationoffamiliesasawaytoreconciletheworld.Asshesaid(Align,1988,p. 20):"Thefamilyisamicrocosm.Byknowinghowtohealthefamily,Iknowhowtohealtheworld."WiththisoverviewsheestablishedprofessionaltraininggroupsintheSatirModelintheMiddleEast,theOrient,WesternandEasternEurope,CentralandLatinAmerica,andRussia.TheInstituteforInternationalConnections,AvantaNetwork,andtheInternationalHumanLearningResourcesNetworkareconcreteexamplesofteachingpeoplehowtoconnectwithoneanotherandthenextendtheconnections.Herworldimpactcouldbesummedupinheruniversalmantra:peacewithin,peacebetween,peaceamong. Inthemid-1970sherworkwasextensivelystudiedbytheco-foundersofNeuro-linguisticprogramming(NLP),RichardBandlerandJohnGrinder,whouseditasoneofthethreefundamentalmodelsofNLP.[12]BandlerandGrinderalsocollaboratedwithSatirtoauthorChangingWithFamiliesforScienceandBehaviorBooks,whichborethesubtitle'ABookAboutFurtherEducationforBeingHuman'.TheVirginiaSatirGlobalNetwork,originallynamed"AVANTA"bySatir,isaninternationalorganizationthatcarriesonherworkandpromotesherapproachtofamilytherapy.[10] In1984,Satirencouragedmarriageandfamilytherapiststoshifttheirfocustorelationshipeducation: We'reatacrossroads,animportantcrossroadsofhowweviewpeople.That'swhyit'spossiblenowforallthedifferentkindoftherapiestogointoeducation,educationforbeingmorefullyhuman,usingwhatweknowasapathologyisonlysomethingthattellsusthatsomethingiswrongandthenallowsustomovetowardshowwecanusethistodeveloproundpeople.I'mfortunateinbeingoneofthepeoplewhopushedmywaythroughtoknowthatpeoplearereallyround.That'swhatitmeanstometolookatpeopleaspeoplewhohavepotentialthatcanberealized,aspeoplewhocanhavedreamsandhavetheirdreamsworkout.Whatpeoplebringtomeintheguiseofproblemsaretheirwaysoflivingthatkeepthemhamperedandpathologicallyoriented.Whatwe'redoingnowisseeinghoweducationallowsustomovetowardmorejoy,morereality,moreconnectedness,moreaccomplishmentandmoreopportunitiesforpeopletogrow. SteveAndreas,oneofBandlerandGrinder'sstudents,wroteVirginiaSatir:ThePatternsofHerMagic(1991)inwhichhesummarizedthemajorpatternsofSatir'swork,andthenshowedhowSatirappliedtheminarichlyannotatedverbatimtranscriptofavideotapedsessiontitled"ForgivingParents".Inthissession,Satirworkswithawomanwhohatedhermother,andhaddifficultyconnectingwithothersasaresult.Usingavarietyofrole-plays,includinga"familyreconstruction",thiswomancametoseehermotherasher"bestfriend",asdetailedina3½yearfollow-upinterview. Shediedin1988ofpancreaticcancer.[13] ProcessofChangeModel[edit] AnotherofSatir'sworkthatwouldhavelastingimpactsonmanyfieldsistheProcessofchangemodel.Thismodelillustrateshowindividualsgothroughchangeandhowtheycancopewithsuchchangetoimprovetheirrelationshipwitheachother.TheProcessofChangeModelisdividedintofourstages:latestatusquo,chaos,practiceandintegration,andnewstatusquo. Inthefirststageofchange,thelatestatusquo,Satirarguedtheindividualisinapredictableenvironment.Statusquoinvolvesasetroutine,fixedideasabouttheworld,andanestablishedbehavior.Thisstageisallaboutpredictabilityandfamiliarity. Thesecondstageofchangeischaos.Chaos,asdescribedbySatir,occurswhensomethingintheenvironmentorintheindividualchanges.Thischangebringsasenseofunfamiliarityandthepreviouslystableroutinecannolongerbeheld.Inthestageofchaos,herearemanystrongfeelingslikesadness,fear,confusion,stress,amongothers.Satirarguesthatinthechangestageofchaos,therapistsmusthelpfamiliesandindividualsnavigatetheseemotions.[10]Additionally,chaosisimportantbecauseitbringsoutcreativityinindividualstofindsolutions. Thethirdstageofchangeispracticeandintegration.Inthisstagenewideasarebeingimplementedandindividualsarefiguringoutwhat worksbest.Likeanyotherskill,itrequirespatienceandpractice. Thefinalstageofchangeisthenewstatusquo.Inthisstage,thenewideas,behaviors,andchangesarenotsonewanymore.Individualstendtoacclimatetothechange,figureoutwhatworks,andbecomebetterattheirnewskill.
