CanToxicShockSyndromeBePrevented? Washinghandswellandoftencanhelppreventthebacteriathatcausetoxicshocksyndromefromspreading. Duringtheirperiods,girlscanreducetheirriskofTSSby: washingtheirhandswellbeforeandafterinsertingatampon notusingtamponsoralternatingthemwithsanitarynapkins ifusingtampons,chooseoneswiththelowestabsorbencythatwillhandlemenstrualflow,andchangethetamponsoften onlow-flowdays,usingpadsinsteadoftampons Betweenmenstrualperiods,storetamponsawayfromheatandmoisture,wherebacteriacangrow(forexample,inabedroomratherthaninabathroomcloset).
