DespiteherdeepfearsaboutvisitingIran,particularlyduetotheIranianHostageCrisisofseveralyearsearlier,BettyreluctantlyagreesafterherhusbandpromisestheywillsafelyreturntoAmerica.Upontheirarrival,Mahtobisembraced,whileBetty'sunfamiliaritywithIraniancultureinadvertentlyoffendssomemembersofMoody'sfamily.ThenightbeforetheirflightbacktotheUnitedStates,Moody'sbrotherMammaltellsMoodyandBettythatinorderforthemtogobackhome,theirpassportswouldhavetohavebeentakentotheairportforapprovalthreedaysprior.Bettyquestionsthis,butMoodybrushesthisoff,suggestingthattheywilltakealaterflight. AfterBettyinsiststhattheygototheairportanyway,Moodyrevealsthatheneverintendedforthemtoreturn,andthattheywillremaininIranpermanently.WhenBettyprotests,Moodybecomesenragedandstrikesher.BettytriestoearnsympathyfromMoody'sfamily,butisscornedbythem.Iran'swarwithIraqcontinues,withthefamilyhavingtoshelterinplaceduringanIraqimissileattack;MoodyblamesthesedifficultiesonAmericansupportforIraq.
