Evasion of programmed cell death (apoptosis): cancer cells suppress and inactivate genes and pathways that normally enable cells to die. Self-sufficiencyingrowthsignals:cancercellsacquireanautonomousdrivetoproliferate-pathologicalmitosis-byvirtueoftheactivationofoncogenessuchasrasormyc. Insensitivitytogrowth-inhibitory(antigrowth)signals:cancercellsinactivatetumorsuppressorgenes,suchasRb,thatnormallyinhibitgrowth. Evasionofprogrammedcelldeath(apoptosis):cancercellssuppressandinactivategenesandpathwaysthatnormallyenablecellstodie. Limitlessreplicationpotential:cancercellsactivatespecificgenepathwaysthatrenderthemimmortalevenaftergenerationsofgrowth. Sustainedangiogenesis:cancercellsacquirethecapacitytodrawouttheirownsupplyofbloodandbloodvessels-tumorangiogenesis.
