Keyfindings: Thereisnorisk-freelevelofexposuretosecondhandsmoke. Sincethe1964SurgeonGeneral’sReport,2.5millionadultswhowerenonsmokersdiedbecausetheybreathedsecondhandsmoke. Secondhandsmokecausesnearly34,000prematuredeathsfromheartdiseaseeachyearintheUnitedStatesamongnonsmokers. Nonsmokerswhoareexposedtosecondhandsmokeathomeorworkincreasetheirriskofdevelopingheartdiseaseby25-30%. SecondhandsmokecausesmanylungcancerdeathsamongU.S.nonsmokerseachyear. Nonsmokerswhoareexposedtosecondhandsmokeathomeoratworkincreasestheirriskofdevelopinglungcancerby20-30%.
