Smokingbyparentsincreasestheriskoflungcancerinchildrenandincreasethelikelihoodofdiseasesincludingotitismedia(earinfection),asthma,pneumoniaandleukemia.Itcouldalsoleadtosuddeninfantdeathsyndrome,poorfetalgrowthandstillbirth.Evenifparentsdonotsmokeinfrontoftheirchildren,residualthird-handsmokeattachedtotheirclothes,carandfurnishingcouldstillbeharmfultochildren. Smokinginhouses=IndoorHazeandbringsharmtoyoungchildren PM2.5(particulatematter2.5micrometersorlessindiameter)concentrationinthehouseofsmokersis10timesthatofthoseinhousesofnon-smokers. TheamountofPM2.5exposureofanon-smokerwholivewithsmokersissimilartothatofonewholivesinacitywithseverehaze.A70%reductionofPM2.5isfoundinnonsmokinghouseholds. Thechanceofgettinglungcancerforthoselivingwithsmokersis20~30%higherthanthatoftheaveragepopulation Inadditiontocausingoraggravatingrespiratorytractdiseases,chronicsecondhandsmokeexposureisrelatedtoleukemia,lymphoma,brainandcentralnervoussystemlesions,liverlesion,hepatoblastomaandothercancersinchildren. Secondhandsmokeexposurerateinfamilyreachesashighas55.3% Accordingtothe“Children’sHealthCareRequirementInvestigation,”secondhandsmokeexposurerateindomesticinfantsunder18-month-oldwasashighas55.3%.Continuousfollow-upofinfantsatage3and5showedsecondhandsmokeexposureratesof58.9%and54.3%. Infantsaged18months,3yearsand5yearsseekingmedicaltreatmentduetoasthma,otitismediaandbronchitishaveexposureratestosecondhandsmokeof55.6%,58.5%and53.4%,respectively. Third-handsmokeisaninvisiblekillerforinfants Infantslivingwithsmokersnotonlyhavetosustainhazardsofsecondhandsmoke,butalsofacethreatsfromthird-handsmoke.Studiesshowthatthird-handsmokeleftontheclothes,carandhouseholdfurnishingmaystillleadtoleukemiaevenifsmokersdonotsmokeinfrontoftheirchildren. Nicotinecomeswithstrongsurfaceadhesionandchemicallyreactswiththenitrate,ozoneandothercompoundsintheairtoproduceevenmorepowerfulnewtoxinssuchasnitrosamineandothercarcinogensthatadheretotheclothing,furniture,curtainorcarpet. Earlysmokingcessationkeepschildrenhealthywithfewerdiseases Thetoxicparticlesofthird-handsmokewhichlingerintheenvironmentcontainatleast11typesofhighlycarcinogeniccompoundsthatmayleadtocognitivedefectsinchildrenandincreasethelikelihoodofinfantileasthmaandmiddleearcancers.Theyareparticularlythreateningtoinfantscrawlinginthehouse. Smokingishazardoustothehealth.Secondhandorthird-handsmokenotonlydamagestheinfant’srespiratorysystembutalsoseriouslyaffecttheirbraindevelopment.
